Hallmark 60's Custom pots

Postby M.G. » Sun Mar 08, 2009 9:28 am

I've heard mention of 250K pots in the 60's Custom, but when I checked mine out they were 500K. My sunburst is from the second run - did they change the pot value between the first and second run?

If your's came with 500k's then they must have changed them. Mine is from the first run and it had 250k's and I changed them to 500k's.

My pearl whie Custom 60 is from the 3rd run (I guess). It had 250K's, but I have put 500 K's in.

Gentleman,
We have the 60 Customs stock with 250 K pots. I have heard of people switching to 500 K to suit there preference and I have heard that some Mosrites have 500 K, but I don't own any. All the Vintage Mosrites I am familiar with are 250 K pots. If anyone wants 500 K, we can do that! We also offer hand wound pickups. I have seen some discussion on that. The Phillips head or the flat head pole pieces mean nothing except for the run it came from. We have a large stash of original Mosrite bar Alnico Magnets and breakaway Mosrite Alnico magnets as well as the original pickup coil wire and rewind Mosrite pickups to their original specs all the time. If anyone wants nonpotted pickups with vintage original components, all they have to do is let us know. Just e-mail Bob Shade through the website and we'll hook you up. Damon 63 was awful happy with the pickup we made with the wood cover for his double neck. If you didn't know which one was rebuilt, ( including the aged wood cover), you could never tell, even if you took it apart.

Again, Thanks for your kind indulgence,

The New Mosrite/Hallmark Forever

Hey Dennis,
The hottest I have wound myself are close to 14 K. I will have to check with Bob if anyone has requested hotter. He told me that as an experiment, he wound one to I believe, 20 K. He told me that it didn't sound any better and that there is, not much point in going much above 13 K. As for humbuckers, I have to check with Bob again. I think there are still some of the Swept-Wing style, but I am unsure of the 60 custom style. We can always handwind some.

Hello Mosriteforever,

many thanks for getting into this thread. Very interesting for me as a Custom 60 player. By the way, I love mine :D .

You mentioned, that you do hand wound PUPs as well. What is the difference in sound to the stock custom 60 PUPs ?
What influence does it take, if you wound them hotter (for example difference between a 10K and a 13 k PUP) ?
what PUPs will the Custom 59 feature ?

sorry for asking and asking so many question ;)

best Twangs

Hey Matze,
Let me see if I can answer your questions. The stock 60 customs are wound hot to our specs, but they are potted which makes them suitable for a wide range of amps and styles. I always found cranking my Mosrite through my Marshall, I got a lot of feedback and had to cut the volume down to keep it under control. I do not have the problem with the 60 custom. Our hand wound pickups are not potted, and wound with vintage wire and vintage alnico magnets. I find they are more microphonic and more prone to feedback, but a bit more responsive and very reminescent of the original vintage pickups. A lot of things go into the sound of a guitar including scale lengtth and wood as well as what materials are used in the finish. I rewound a pickup in one of my 64 Ventures models, and defy anyone to tell which one it is. The one in Damon's 63 double neck is the same way.

What is the difference in a 10K and a 13K? In my opinion it is a little more resposive to the player's touch as well as sounding cleaner when the amp isn't cranked up too much. Everyone's ear is different, but I prefer pickups at about 12 to 13K.

The 59 custom will still have the same potted pickups as the 60 Custom as we feel it is a good all around pickup and we don't want to give up the height adjustment like on the original 59's when it was the same pickup in a different cover, just for purely cosmetic reasons. Of course, we can wind pickups for any model to whatever anyone wants, but it does up the price.

I hope this answers your questions,
Keep Rockin', John

Here's a photo of one of the pots in my 60 Custom - the other has the value covered by solder. It's little blurry, but you can make out the 500K.
