Nokie Edwards & Tommy Emmanuel

I don't know if any of you are aware of this.... I wasn't. There is a group of pickers that get together every year, called the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society. A fellow Ventures fan, on another forum, sent me a DVD of the 1998 event. I received it Saturday.
Among the acts is a lengthy jam, featuring Nokie Edwards with Tommy Emmanuel playing rhythm and trading licks with Nokie. It's a home video type DVD. But, it is fantastic. They play several Ventures tunes and then jam on other songs, as well. The contrast between Nokie's laid back style and personality vs. Tommy Emmanuels full throttle attack, is entertainment in it's self. Nokie's playing what looks to be a Custom built Tele w/ Humbuckers and Tommy is playing a Takimine Electric/ Acoustic, which I'm sure is not stock.

Has anyone else seen this?

Yeah, CAAS event is great. They run every year in July in Nashville.

I haven't seen the 1998 concert DVD but I was there in 2007 while Nokie, Tommy and Richard Smith gave a fantastic concert. Nokie used a Hitchhiker guitar (his own brand) while Tommy used Maton EBG808TE (his signature model)

That will be a Nokie Edwards Telecaster made by Fender (approx. 150 built), with a sloped-back headstock, zero fret, Seymour Duncan humbuckers with split coils. I happen to have Nokie's very own NE Tele guitar in a case with flight tags in the name of Nole Edwards.

I have been reading this group on and off. Finally signed up a few days ago. Like many on this site, I suffer from GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome), with a particular affinity for Mosrites (I have several). I also play them - I have 4 tracks - Apache, Secret Agent Man, Needles and Pins, Skylab (the first 3 with Mosrites on lead) at:

Nokie's HitchHiker, while a nice-looking guitar, is just a Mosrite copy with a very ugly headstock that looks like a mitten with the thumb giving the "heads up" sign - http://www.edroman.com/guitars/mosrite/ventures.htm.

Besides the "sexy" (I hate that term but...) body with the almost equal horns, what I loved was the headstock as opposed to the very boring Fender. Only Aria came out with a nice headstock and, of course, I owned an Aria!

I don't understand why he would have a look-alike when he could have the real thing as he must have in in his "closet." Has anyone ever heard if Nokie has a Mosrite guitar display in his home? Ditto for the other members.

a.) I love Nokie Edwards and all the Ventures,

b.) wish I had a Hitchhiker, but I don't have to own one to like it, I'm perfectly happy with my Hallmark (...how about: with a "shapely" body),

c.) ah, yes and last but not least, absolutely love Fenders with "boring" headstocks...

The Stratocaster model is my very first love, after all. THE REST HAD STILL TO FOLLOW!!! (yeah, you know, like the 'flipped over' Strat Semie used for the now so sought after Mosrite)

Univoxer: "I have a problem brought on by my finding out on another thread that some or many of The Ventures LPs were not recorded by The Ventures but by session musicians such as bassist Carol Kaye. So, as I said, I love the musicians that were on the records I bought for that is how I learned to love The Ventures. I can't say I love Nokie now that there are doubts. He may be one heck of a picker but whoever did the picking on the LPs, that's who I love."

Univoxer: "I'd rather have a Hallmark than a Hitchiker. But how do you feel about Dillion Mosrite look-alikes? A couple of years ago I passed on a bass on eBay and I haven't stopped kicking myself since then. I got sore lower back!"

Univoxer: "I was never a guitar enthusiast although my dad used to play live on the radio in the '30s but he used a Spanish-style acoustic. When I saw my first Mosrite I understood why I wasn't crazy about any other design. When I bought my first Mosrite The Ventures model bass in the early '70s, and it had to be a '60s model, it was like finding guitar or bass nirvana. I caressed the heck out of that body! While I enjoyed my 2nd Mosrite, the Joe Maphis model, it wasn't the same as The Ventures Model. When I see musicians onstage on TV I look for the bassist to see if he/she is playing a Fender and you can tell from a distance. At that moment I ignore him/her. Any other brand, not a Fender look-alike, I pay more attention. For example, in the '80s owning an Aria Pro II I enjoyed seeing the "New Wave" bassists using Arias. As you may know Jack Bruce used an Aria. Beautiful guitars. Even my J.K. Lado had a pleasant headstock. If Semie had made a Mosrite with a Fender-style headstock I would have had different feelings about appreciating them or acquiring them, regardless of The Ventures connection."
