Greetings From Calgary!

Postby CalgaryAaron » Wed Aug 13, 2014 10:45 am

Hello
So here is the bass I've recently acquired. It needs a little love and care but it sounds great. The front pickup needs to be reattached and the tone knob needs to be fixed. It has seized up and is stuck. Also their is a terrible buzz from the pickguard or the pickups. Either way it's an easy fix. I don't really know anything about this bass other than I think it is going to take over for my Jazz bass when fully functional. The serial number is 65743159. Their is no date in the neck pocket or on the neck itself. I'm also guessing the original owner painted the head stock. I'd like to get this bass back to original shape if possible. Anyways, let me know what you all think.

Here it is in all of its glory. Should it have a red head stock or should it be wood grain?

I'm wondering if the whole body and neck has been refinished. There are no holes for the bridge cover so they may have been filled in. I would think a painted neck would have the body color on the front of the headstock.

If you remove the neck and pickguard you might find some indication of the original color. There might be some trace under the truss rod cover as well.

You can try spraying the tone pot with contact cleaner to see if it frees it up. The buzz is most likely a ground problem. Could be oxidation on the jack or maybe the tone control is contributing to the noise.

You are correct about it being refinished. On closer inspection the bridge cover holes have been filled in (poorly I might add). I'm thinking the best bet would be to just leave the paint alone alone (I like the faded red). I took the neck and pickguard off and it's red all over. I also took the truss rod cover off only to find that it was decoration and the truss rod is adjusted at the other end. I also couldn't find a construction date on the neck either. The buzzing isn't so much electrical but the pickguard and something else. It sounds distroted when not plugged in, if that makes any sense. Is that even a Mosrite serial number?

Nice bass! I've never seen a serial number like that on a Mosrite but you never know. That's part of the fun with Mosrites. Too bad someone painted the headstock. The red looks nice, though.

The action is so low on these basses that you might hear some buzzing when playing hard. If you don't hear it through an amp I wouldn't worry about it.
