Never happened on my H60C. Indeed playing style perhaps. Jazzmaster bridges have a particularly bad reputaion for this happening, I had a JM myself myself
Check the "V" groove on your low E roller; it should be wider than the roller supporting your top E string.
Speaking of Hallmarks, they get mentioned a lot, even though not regularly in this thread ;)

Hey Paul, yup, I know that Hallmarks get mentioned a lot around here. I just see this particular thread as kind of being "home base" for us owners.
As far as the groove in the low E roller goes, it looks fine, but it only takes the slightest amount of sideways (downward from a playing position) pressure to cause it to pop off of of the roller. My thinking is this may be in part due to the fact that the low E string is already being pulled downward by the angle that it takes to go through the hole in the trem.

At any rate, the string has stayed put of late, so I'm sure my picking style had something to do with it. I also have a Jazzmaster and know what you mean about the reputation there. In fact I changed my JM bridge to a Mustang bridge, and it seemed to cure the problem.

A question for Bob Shade or anyone regarding adjustability of the Custom 60 pickups. Are they adjustable height wise? My high E string while sounding just fine playing solo, doesn't seem to cut through the mix when playing with a band. The treble notes seem to be getting overpowered. Can the Hallmark pups be adjusted to bring the treble side just a little closer to the string to maybe give it a bit more volume? I DID try turning the last (treble side) screw on each pickup about a half turn to see what it would do and I think it made the high E ring a bit more, but it also gave it a "harmonic" sound (for lack of a better description. Am I on the right track or should "well enough" be left alone?

Hey Rob, I'm not knowlegeable about adjustability of the Custom 60 pickups but I would imagine it possible to adjust either end of a Pup to the required height :? Also, try adjusting your high E string to perform at higher action by getting more resulting sustain from it. This remedy has worked for me with a similar issue I had on one of my Strats!

Rollers:
My low E roller supports a .46 guage string. (whole set is 10/46). Logic tell me a thicker guage string would want to pop off much more readily. If 'your' issue persists, perhaps Bob (or someone else) could customize the low E roller for you? (i.e. making the "V" groove a tad wider). Good luck!

I just got a new Hallmark 60 and used it for the first time last night. Nice guitar, but I had the same thing happen with the low E - popped out of the saddle when I was attacking it hard. Now that I'm conscious of it, maybe I can keep it from happening.

Does anyone know what type/gauge strings these guitars are delivered with? Thanks.

Mine came (ordered end of 2009) equipped with a set of 10/46 GHS strings. Never had the 'popping out' issue but then I don't play Ramones style guitar either ;)
BTW, congrats on your new Hallmark.

We send out the H60C's with 10 guage strings GHS or D'Addario. 11's also work great on these guitars. Hey Rob, if you have any questions about the pickups feel free to call me at the shop. Might be easier.

Best, Bob

I have one of the first run Custom 60's and use 11's with a wound 3rd. I have never had a string pop out of the bridge and the 6th is .049. I don't really play with a heavy hand though. They are great playing guitars.

So I don't own a Hallmark, but I have a Kurokumo Super Excellent 65 and I have this same issue. The low E string pops off its saddle and subsequently breaks very often. I use 11 gauge strings. From reading what you guys have been talking about here, it seems I should try some slightly lighter gauge strings. I do love thicker strings, but I guess I'll try some 10's instead of 11's this time. It's also been suggested that there might be a bur or imperfection in the roller that is gradually wearing away at the strings. I'll check on that and post what I find.

An update:
I put a set of 11 gauge Elixr strings on my Custom 60 and raised the bridge a bit and have NOT had a string pop off of the saddle since. Raising the bridge changed the action a little, but it still plays just fine. I think the combination of the heavier strings along with slightly more tension over the saddles has cured the problem. At least it seems to have so far. I LOVE this guitar!
