Rose Maphis Guitar(s)

Postby Dennisthe Menace » Mon Apr 04, 2011 11:15 am

Does anyone here on the Forum have any info on Rose (Rosie) Maphis guitars? I've seen very few pix on her gutiars
and I'm sure there must be some 'hidden history' to the guitars she played......

Dennis,
Here's a shot of one of Rose Lee's guitar. One of several I would imagine. Jody said that this particular
instrument had undergone several incarnations. He also thought this old Martin at one time had
a Bigsby neck on it. Whether it was by Paul or Semie I don't know.

Bryan Browne shown with the historic instrument.

WoW! Thanks Terry, I totally forgot about the Martin. The one I'm trying to chase down is a Sunburst
Non-cutaway Archtop in which she has the black Mosrite p'up w/housing ring (from the 60s) in the neck
position. She has a white p'guard with "Rosie" on it. The body looks to be from either a Gibson, Kay or
Harmony style with Uncle Semie's magic neck installed, or at least that's what I had thought, so don't
quote me on that  ,,,,,,,,,.

I have seen pics of her with several different acoustics with Mosrite necks on them and/or Semie pickguards. Also, for sure, an acoustic that had a Bigsby neck and Semie pickguard.

Also, there were a few electrics I'm right sure. Her and Joe had matching early Moseley built electrics that looked like the Sterling branded guitar that was posted on this site. Joe's, in it's original state, had 3 pickups...not it has two. Hers had 2 pickups and still does. Her neck said Rose Lee and his said Joe Maphis.

I wish I had a scanner that worked, I could scan in a bunch of photos!!!

Casey

P.s. I'm sure that Deke Dickerson has some shots of them somewhere...that dude has everything :)

When I met Joe and Rose Lee back in '81, she was playing a Gibson non-cutaway archtop (an ES-125, I think) with a dark-colored Semie Moseley pickguard if I remember correctly--well, it was thirty years ago! I can't remember if it had a Moseley neck or the original Gibson one, either--heck, I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday!
