Re: Fender Duo Sonic
Today I was at Home Depot on another mission when I happened by the paint department. I glanced at the color charts on the wall and immediately spotted the color I've been searching for. I took the color sample to the clerk to inquire about the possibility of having him mix the colors for me in a quart of clear lacquer. He said he could not oblige me but if I would buy an empty quart can he would mix up a batch of toners enough to make up a gallon of paint. Did I ever luck out. Not only did I get the color I wanted but also found they carried 'Tints all' toners. This is what Stew Mac use to sell and where I got my color toners for candy apple blue and red. Also that's what I use on my three tone sunburst. He said, nobody buy's that kind of stuff and it was just some left over stock.

hey danny, could you give more information, I'd like to see if I can find the same kind of toners in my local HD or lowes. thanks. I'm glad you found what you were looking for. i bet that color would be the bomb with a pretty clear coat on top.

Cheers,

Re: Fender Duo Sonic
I've been trying different methods of making the 'clay' dot position markers. I've tried vinyl spackling, white wood filler but they do not stand up either buying not drying hard or are to fragile. Next I'm going to try some 15 minute epoxy with some white Tints-All blended in. Hopefully that will work as I'm at a stand still in finishing the fretboard until I can find the right substance to make the position markers. A friend told me that Bill Gruggett uses Bondo and some other ingredient to make those type of markers. Unfortunately there are about ten different varieties of Bondo and the other 'unknown ingredient is no doubt an important part of the process. So it's going to be trial and error. Building this Duo Sonic is really turned out to be more challenging to get right than building the double neck guitar.

Re: Fender Duo Sonic
interesting Danny. Do you know if the original dots were actually made of clay, or is this just the term to refer to them?

Danny,
There's a thread about a neck build on the offset guitar forum, and the guy mentions used epoxy wood filler for the dots.

Re: Fender Duo Sonic
Thanks, Mel!
I checked online and Ace Hardware has the epoxy wood filler, so I'll get some tomorrow. Also I went over to Guitar Center today and ordered the complete bridge assembly for the current made Duo Sonic. I couldn't believe it was only $17.95 complete with mounting screws. They even called Fender and confirmed the price and availability.
I made some progress on the neck today so I thought I'd share these photo's. I am pleased that I was able to capture the curvature of the rosewood in front of the nut area where it goes into the headstock. I never see this shape of transition on the current CNC shaped headstock. They are always shaped straight across.
