I have a friend asking me to add a varitone to his guitar. it's kinda like a cheapo Les Paul. Anyone ever installed one, have any opinions of them? just wondering. I really like them a lot on gibson jazz guitars. What say you tone freaks

Re: Varitone switches
I've had them in two ES345 and two BC Rich guitars. I have never really used or like any of the setting 2-6.

Re: Varitone switches
They are simple devices, easy to wire and can add a set of tones that you can't normally get on a Gibson type guitar. By design, they mainly change the midtones.
For ease of building, I think that Torres Engineering still sells a kit version. I'd guess that others are available as well, or you can assemble the parts and build it from scratch. If your friend wants to pick the sounds, you could custom select each of the cap values to his liking.
I used to have one built into an FX sized box to use and to demo the sound for people.

Re: Varitone switches
A switch I've been impressed with is the Stellartone ToneStyler. It's roots are traced to the space shuttle, which is kinda cool. It really opens up the tone range in both directions. Check it out!
