Hi Oipunkguy, thanks nfor the complement on my work and shop. The tool in question is used for cutting out the spot welds on the body and fender welds on cars. There are three or four different sizes, this one had a 1/4" id, which was just perfect. :)

Hi everyone have a few pics. the neck is repaired, tuners are in place the nut is just their and it has a finish on the neck, not rubed out yet. Had to refigure where the tuners were going, mismeasured, and changrd the type opf tuners I was going to use. Had a heck of time making the nut, had to make 4 before I got it rite, at least I hope it's rite, gues I'll find that out when it comes time to string it up. :)

Looking good woodchuck! Those "mistake dot markers" give it a very honest appeal...and think of Semie Moseley with his own mistakes that he made along the way, such as the now famous "Mistake Plate" Some of our excellent luthiers find it even inspiring enough to reproduce! Looking forward to it's completion...but don't rush!! ;)

speaking of which, I've never really understood the reasons for the mistake plate on the early mosrites. To my knowledge the trem is routed into the body a little, but I don't know why a mistake plate is require for this???????? I'm sure Danny would know ;)

It was the result of a design flaw.

Semie made those first guitars (the Joe Maphis model which became the Ventures model) with the neck glued in on a horizontal plane with the body. When he was ready to install the vibrato/bridge he found it set too high on the body which would have placed the strings about 3/4" above the fretboard. Having already built the guitars and ready for assembly the only solution was to complete them by routing out a recess to sink the vibrato/bridge down into the body. The mistake plate is the half moon black plastic cover surrounding the upper and back edge of the vibrato covering the unsightly recess channel.

BTW, woodchuck, you're doing a great job and it is a very interesting and unique project. It's a great learning experience to build your own guitar, isn't it? ;)

You know what I would do if I were you, Woodchuck? Put dot markers on EVERY fret! Very Spinal Tap. Forget going up to 11 - you could go up to 22!

Hi Veenture, Yeah the maple makes it hard to disguise the mistakes, if I would have used rosewood or another darker wood on the finger board they would never have been detected. Hay does that mean I'm famous like Mosley? I doubt that
