Hey guys, lots 'n' lots of positive feedback on the Hallmark 60 Custom as always but, -like even the best of cars can have that irksome rattle behind the dashboard somewhere- my Hallmark had a rattle too.
As soon as I strummed it, something was vibrating/resonating to a certain frequency of the strings and I figured it was that typical 'something behind the dashboard'-thing since these undesired tones were coming from somewhere underneath the pick-guard, which I rather did not want to dismount.
Later I discovered that it stopped if I held my hand against the neck pickup but the rattle would come back again when I let go.

It didn't effect playability in the least and I tried to ignore it but then I'm one of those characters that have to get to the bottom of things so I kept on 'searching' on and off

The solution was ever so simple; merely the neck pickup ring (surround?) wasn't screwed down all the way! My gentle use of a suitable Philips screwdriver about two months ago did the trick! Problem solved; thought I'd just let y'all know ;)

For Paul and any others that might be thinking of getting under the hood of the C60, I have now been told by four different guitar technicians that this guitar has a particularly strong neck. What this means for some one who like to tinker every so often is that adjustment made to the truss rod might not show up instantaniously. When you adjust a Fender neck you get result immediately. This is what I have literally grown up expecting. I was lucky to have a good friend and an accomplished tech save me from myself when I attempted to straighten out my C60's neck. Just a warning. Just be patient and make any changes very slight at a time.

Hey Hallmark owners,
Just noticed over at Surf Guitar that 'Man or Astroman?' is back together and doing a few gigs to maybe get the ball rolling on getting out on the road again.
Apparently, they will be playing Hallmark Swept Wings and Custom 60s.
I don't know if this deserves its own thread, but thought it might be of interest to some of the Hallmark owners around here.

Just got my new 60 Custom today. (3/3/10) My first reaction was, "Man, this case is heavy!" Upon opening it, with my sister-in-law and my 16-year-old granddaughter watching, we all said as one--"Whoa..." The Surf Pearl really is spectacular, and pics don't really do it justice--in person it's iridescent. I'm glad I switched my order from the sunburst, although I like the 'burst too. After pulling it out of the case and playing a few licks, I noticed that the action was extremely low (characteristic of Mosrites too) right out of the box. The neck is a little narrower than what I've been playing (a Carvin with 1-11/16" width and 20" radius and jumbo frets), but it's quite playable--1-5/8" width, I'd guess. The radius is fairly flat--without measuring it, I'd guess maybe 16". I'd prefer taller frets--these are more like vintage Fender frets would have been when new--but they're not nearly as low as the old Mosrite "speed frets". I can deal with them--I just have to push or pull a little harder on bends. The rosewood fingerboard provides enough grip for that, and the flatter radius and 24-3/4" scale help too. Down at the other end, I have to say that the vibrato is the most comfortable and ergonomic one I've ever used. The bar is exactly the right length and shape for my hand, doesn't set too low or too high from the top, and has a nice springy positive feel. I had Bob install his upgrade washer, so I don't expect the bar will loosen up (I hate when that happens!). The pickups are darker-sounding than most single-coils, and they do sound a lot like what you hear on mid-'60's Ventures records. It actually sounds a lot like the SG Standard I bought new in '67 and played through about '71--on the neck pickup with the tone control backed off and some dirt dialled in, I was able to nail Eric Clapton's Cream-era tone c. 1967. Jazz on the neck pickup with the tone down about 2/3rds works well too. The bridge pickup doesn't twang, but it has a good biting sound that works well either clean or dirty, and the two-pickup mix sounds quite a bit like the SG as well. Must be the slant on the neck pickup. The neck was dead straight out of the box, and I'm getting some almost-buzzes on my second and fourth strings from the first fret to about the fifth, so it looks like a truss-rod adjustment is in order. I'll post some more after I have that done. I'm going to get a gig bag so I don't have to kill myself lugging it around--in the case it must be 17-18 pounds! It's a nice case, though--I'll save it for out-of-town gigs.

Thanks for that report Jon...always good to hear what others find. Congrats and have fun...and a picture will be in order of course ;)
BTW, is the treble horn carve on yours of the 'soft' type?

Yes!

To carve my own nitch in this thread (pun intended)............ we have now gone from the later more machined style carve found in carves of the later 60's to the earlier hand work German carve on the lower treble horn.

All 60 and 59 Customs now have this pre-66 style carve.

So for anyone who has not taken the Hallmark dive into the surf due to the horn carve not being to their brand of board wax , you can rest assured now that you WILL get your guitar just the way you like it!

So, eefen you don't get one now, "You aint nothin but a Honda" (Kidding)

Thanks for the thread and interest!

Paul! it's funny that you said that, because I swear a had a very similar issue with my Mosrite VII. I searched and searched for the problem. I finally found it! The pickups selector switch had raddled loose, lol.   glad I found the issue when I did too. almost lost an original mosrite part.

But just so you know I've had issues like this on a guitar before from time to time. some tremolo springs will rattle a bit too much, I've even have had a truss rod that had no tension on it raddle like crazy on me. onto the next tip. when soldering new pickups in a guitar, dont leave small bits of solder laying inside the guitar cavity for the owner to find later, heh heh. :ugeek:

Here are some Hallmark owners in action. The band is Man or Astroman? and they have a loyal following. One of the band members is a member of this forum, so here they are kicking off their first show in a long time.

Hallmark Swept Wings and a 60 custom, and a Mosrite at the end. The comments are flying at Surfguitar 101!
