Question about who holds their value

Postby GTSP » Thu Jan 28, 2010 12:11 pm

For the sake of this thread, let's include the modern Mosrites and all clones in the same category. What is your opinion on which clone holds their value the best? Hallmark, Ranger, Kurokomo, Eastwood, etc.
In order of purchase:
1) Mosrite Ranger
2) V88
3) Stereo 350
4) Hallmark II in Johnny Blue
5) Danelectro '66
6) Celebrity III
7) Hallmark Gospel
8) Serenade
9) Eastwood 300

This is an interesting question for me. I buy my guitars to suit my personal taste rather than for what they might be worth down the road. In that case I think that any of the guitars (possibly other than the Eastwood) should hold their value rather well. This is assuming that they are properly maintained. I have to think that the great starting price of the Hallmarks might lend them to a more level range of future value. This particular thought is partly due to the fact that I am not sure what the other models sell for today. I'm not degrading anybody, I just don't know.
A warning here. Keep your clones away from Guitar Center. They have no idea where to price the used models, and I have heard that they don't even appreciate the vintage Mosrites.

Eastwood is the only one that seems to go for about 1/2 of it's original cost. The rest seem to hold there value pretty well.

I don't know anything about the available clone guitars out there, but, I sure do like the Hallmark models that I've seen.

I've seen used Fillmores sell for the price of new on Ebay. There was a gorgeous gold flaky Hallmark last week that sold for just under $700.00. They do seem to really hold their value. I've seen some of the Kurokomo's sell for $2k as well. Crazy.

On the other hand, there have seem to be quite a few Johnny Ramone models with the blue flake up for sale recently & they're going for under $800.00. Probably because there is a much smaller market for those guitars.

I don't know but that the Hallmarks may increase in value, over time. Outside of this and a couple of surf forums, there doesn't seem to be too many people aware of Hallmark Guitars. I'm sure Bob doesn't produce near the volume of guitars as Fillmore or Eastman. So, as the years go by and people stumble on to what a great guitar the Hallmark actually is, there may not be too many available at today's prices. I notice Bob has already raised the price of the 60 Custom by $100, just since I bought mine.

I agree on the Hallmarks. As for Fillmore I scored one at about half price on ebay used so who knows, maybe I just got lucky. The two JR forevers that went for under $800 were bought by me. The guy said he really needed the money and that's why he sold them so cheap. He also told me he got them at an auction from Ed when he was closing the store for $1200. Kinda hard to say on those, but I know one keeps getting listed for $3000 with no takers. I pretty much only bought the JR's 'cause they were so cheap and I figured one of my friends might want one so I figured I might share the bargain. Ahh, but so far it's still a bit too steep a price for my buddies. That and some are holding out for something else. I know they are available special order through Front Porch but I don't know for how much.

The Mark II deluxe is s'posedly the same as the JR model, just w/ no Ramones logo & Arite has the for $1,600.00 + $70.00 for shipping at his store. At least that's what he quoted me a few months ago.
