The block is an old style capacitor. The color dots are the codes for the value and the voltage ratings, etc.

Thanks for the tip on the reverb tank. I switched the "in" and "out" leads and it did NOT go "boing" anymore, so it must be the input transducer on the tank. I'll try swapping out the tank for a new one and see what happens.

1965 sounds about right to me, that would be the year of the Dumble-built tube amps, right?

If you pull out the tank, look for broken wires that connect the input coil to the RCA jack. This is a very common problem.

If you have one, try a tank from a Peavey solid state amp or from an Ampeg tube amp. I think that you'll need a high impedance input tank in there, so a standard Fender will not work.

As long as you're dragging out a multimeter, check input and output resistance on the tank, then check your resistors and see if your multimeter has a capacitance tester, it probably does, and check capacitance. It's very likely got a bad resistor or 2, maybe a cap, or it may just have a broken solder joint or loose connection. PM me if you like Deke, that thing looks very cool.
