My string guide came loose.

Postby billywrecker » Sat Oct 10, 2009 6:31 am

What kind of glue should I use to fix it? I do need to order some hide glue to fix my upright bass, but I would rather use something that I could go out and find today.
Thanks

Hello Billy, the right way to go is to gently sand the bottom of the string guide to get the old glue off, and do the same for the resting point on the neck. Then use Elmers or white glue to re-glue. This way if it ever needs to be removed you can still get it off. Not alot is needed, then re-string while the glue is wet. Let dry.

I've used superglue before with success. the only downside is if you put on too much it can cause a mess. all you need is two very small drops if you decide to go this rout.

Super glue is also very toxic and can attack some finishes and paint.

different types of superglues is a regular tool for many luthiers, I agree with Bob's idea on gluing down the string guide, but at times I've have trouble making titebond stick to a surface that is metal to wood. which was the point to my added suggestion.
But also superglue can be used for finish repairs, whereas is not always the tool of choice in many cases, still has it's place on the right kind of repair.

I too use Cyanoacrylate form the hobby shop, though it's not Superglue brand. I use the (medium or thick) and it works great for metal string guides. I place a couple of small drops on the bottom of each side nearest the zero fret. I've never had a problem removing the guide at a later date. Simply use a small hammer with a wooden dowel and it pop right off.
