That's a great shot. I remember seeing Columbia on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral in the early 80s. Amazing machines.
As a side question, how do they get the big rear engine cover back to Edwards? This whole 747 piggyback system is an amazing piece of engineering, and it's a secondary part of the space shuttle mission. Is the 747 used for anything else when it's not hauling shuttles?

You know I am not sure - probably just cargo plane to get it back...
The 747s just sit out here on the ramp waiting to be used. Every once in a while you will see them fly but generally they are just parked until needed. They actually have two out here now - well not now one is gone and I don't think it has come back yet.
