Thoughts on 12 string octave double neck?

[url][/url] I know it is not a 12-string octave. But it is a very strange double-neck. Danny I thought you might like to see it. To me it looks like pre-ventures but also it looks a little like a 70's? Well maybe you will take some ideas from it. Looking forward to your build, (one knob what the heck?)

yeah, that one knob.....mmmm.....there seems to be evidence above the existing knob that there has been a (volume?) knob too in the past, unless the 'evidence' is some kind of push button switch?
Another thing...if the switch (toggle?) on the bottom horn is for pup selection, where's the activating switch for the other (shorter) neck? ....unless there's just one input jack catering for both necks?
Very interesting these doublenecks and obviously I have insufficient knowledge of 'em...

Supposedly that guitar was made for Joe Maphis in 1986 and is inscribed to Joe by Semie on the back. The single volume knob was a hallmark of Semie's custom builds during the '80s. His thinking was if you build a perfect sounding instrument, all you ever need is a single volume knob.

Thanks for your insight Adam, yeah,....I reckon when Semie's passion for improving on existing guitars started and taking that historic step in designing and developing his own, he aimed for uncomplicated, practical and playable guitars, always putting himself in the 'driver's seat' of the guitar player customer he was building for. I admire him for that.

Good question Mel. I'll have to go down to Front Porch and check it out to see what all that configuration does.

I'm only in the planning stage at this point. Got the body cut out in rough form but it's too darn hot here to work out in the shop. But I will be starting on the necks in the near future as soon as the heat breaks a little.

Somewthing twisted in this picker is considering doing a double with a Bouzouki second neck, 4 paired strings. Greek, gypsy and Irish can work rather cool on a bouzouki or octave mandolin. Probably one P-90 at the bridge. And you can capo it to do the real mandolin thing.

Also, the octave neck, although tuned a full octave above the standard neck, has a scale length roughly equivalent to starting on the 10th fret as opposed to the 12th. This gives your fat little piggies more room to squeal. Dig?

Besides, an octave neck looks cool. The longer 12 string neck on the top looks out of balance. I extended the octave neck on my current custom build to 15 1/4 inches giving a little more finger space in the the first five to seven registers. I've been playing some Ventures cover tunes on Doug's doubleneck and that octave neck really enhances the capabilities of some of those tunes. Ever hear 'Walk Don't Run' on an octave neck?
