The pickup covers will be routed out of Walnut. Shouldn't be too difficult to make as it will be routed hollow using a template. I will be making the vibrato from scratch or rather from rough castings provided by an interested party. ;)

As for the AP-6 covers, I have been researching the internet on molding plastic and think I've about got it figured out. If so, I will make a wooden mock up of a Carvin pup cover and 'try' to replicate it. So much to do, so little time due to miserably hot and humid weather.

Starting with a rough cast vibrato sounds a bit easier than the full scratch build you did on the first one!

How thick will the pickup covers be? It seems to me wood covers must be fragile.

Mel,

I will be replicating the covers on Damon's dbl nk. Here's a photo from his gallery showing the bottom side of the pickups.

Well, after umpteen dozen hours or sawing, drilling, sanding, shaping and making brass bushings for the bearings on the lathe, I finally have the rough aluminum parts taking the form of the vibrato assembly. I forgot how much work this can be. About another four hundred hours and this will come together as a reproduction '63 double neck guitar.

Wow!!! Looks amazing! Is the string retainer one piece or two?

It's one solid piece of sand cast aluminum.

Great new project.

I've never seen the details of the early vibrato before. Do the bearing bolts thread into the wood of the body?

Yes! A good example is to look at Bob Shades new 59 model. Although the vibrato on his isn't set down into the body as were the original mistake plate guitars, you can clearly see the bearings screwed directly into the body.
