Really enjoyed reading your intro Don, welcome!
I'm sure many of us 'older-young folks' ;) here have stories to tell too, overlapping with yours! Nice to have you on board.
I too recently bought my first Ventures Mosrite type guitar in the form of a lovely sunburst Hallmark 60 Custom and I still have to pinch myself now and then to check if I'm not dreaming again as I had been doing for so long, heh heh.

Allow me a bit of Ventures talk:
I only have 18 vinyl Ventures elpees left, including the double Japanese album "SUPER LIVE '80" but don’t play 'em anymore. However, I'm still at it trying to collect all of their music in digital form (on cd/cdr). Some of their 70's live concerts in Japan are hard to come by since they had only been issued in very expensive Japanese cd "BOX sets" and not sure even if all of these concerts have ever been released on cd as well…besides elpee's.
It would almost seem that I don't enjoy other music since I presently have (whisper)...close to a hundred cd/cd-r's with Ventures music on 'em... :D

BTW I posted my wants-list in the "Music Related" section…

Hey, if the Ventures are keeping you "in Waiting" too long, you might have a chance playing with the "ALL MOSRITE BAND" that's been talked about on the forum somewhere :) Enjoy your stay here,
Paul

Hey Don - Welcome to the forum!!!! I'm also a Big Ventures fan and also a "Newbie" to the forum. I also have several original Print Ventures LP's and still love to listen to them. What's your Favorite? I own two Mosrite Ventures Guitars, a 1965 and a 1983 USA Model. I couldn't resist taking the plunge and getting a Hallmark 60 Custom and I Love it ! I got the Pearl White, probably like a lot of Ventures Fans. I'm now considering a second, maybe a Sunburst. what color did you get? Check out my band The Thunderheads, we play lots of Ventures covers - http://www.myspace.com/thethunderheads

Wow, what a welcome. I had heard that the Ventures had over 150 albums, but I lost count years ago. You gotta move on sometimes and I just got away from "the guys" after I got out of college. The bands that I got in were playing Creedence, Three Dog Night, Loggins & Messina and the like, so my time got tied up learning that stuff. Don't think for a second that I didn't realize that it was the Ventures that set me up with such a great base of general guitar knowledge (not to mention some really good licks) that helped everything else along.
My 60 Custom is a beautiful sunburst. I have wanted that since they started putting that guitar's picture on the back of the albums. When the Fedex guy finally showed up at my door last Saturday, I told him that I had been waiting for this for forty years. He looked a little puzzled and then said, "I did the best I could, sir". I am only one room away from the guitar right now and I still peek in there every few minutes to make sure that I realy have one of these to sit down with. Mr. Shade did a great set up and I was able to fine tune it and start playing within a few minutes of opening it. It is a difficult instrument to put down.
Well, I can hear the call of the new beast, so gotta go for now.
Thanks again for the welcome, I think I am going to learn a lot here. And incidentally, what was the scale length of the original Ventures model? Catch you guys later.

This is some gang that's gotten together here. I also enjoy the B-52's (Rock Lobster & Love Shack, etc) and have been a Gatton (& Buchannon) fan for longer than I like to think about.
I was taking a look at the album that Veenture has as his icon. The blond that originally appeared on the cover is a little cuter than Veenture, but that's just MHO. What I noticed was that the red headstock has a extension to it's lower part that acts as the string guide. I have only had the album for 40 years and never noticed that before. Is that a sign of an earlier model? The bass headstock has a similar detail, only it appears to be another piece of wood (glued in place) rather than an extension of the headstock itself.
Catch you guys ;ater.
