For some reason that one makes me think of keys and keyholes. I'm not sure why, exactly. It gets the point across but... Keys....

Cool Standel! How does it sound? Is it heavy? Also, what's the scoop on the decals - where they supposed to be put on at the factory or were the guitars delivered with the decals to the customer for them to put on if they wanted?

I don't know the complete story on these fiberglass Standels. Not heavy at all, it's actually a hollowbody with everything riding topside except for a void where the pickup switches are. That hole is just big enough to fish the volume and tone pots into position. Floating brige--floating pickups, for that matter. The neck rides very high in the pocket and the surface mounted pickups are at the right height. Zero fret. 24" scale. Non-metallic nut, so easy on the tremolo. Roller bridge.

I'm still trying to figure out what it sounds like. The pickups are a little weak and it seems like a detailed, compressed sound when you've got it amplified adequately. Kinda shimmery in the highs, sometimes banjoey in the mids. And with the tone rolled off a bit, it's got a nice jazz box sound to it. I'm still playing around with it. And I'll post some more pictures, too.

The Celebrity was a bit of a project bought over eBay from a guy in New Jersey. The pictures were enough to ensure that is was indeed a Mosrite, so I hopped on what I thought was a good BIN price. And yet, you get what you pay for. The frets were worn out and repairs were necessary as the neck began to separate where the unsupported fingerboard extended beyond the joint. After rehabilitation including a fret job (preserving the serial no.), it plays very, very nicely. Cosmetically, there are a couple dings and so on. That includes a half-trem with the wrong spring (too narrow, gets grabbed as the arm rotates--working on that) and the telltale signs of a trapeze tailpiece. However, it is a handsome piece of luthiery and my player of choice.

Those Standels were made in Bakersfield. The hollowbody ones are really weird, I think they are fiberglass covering a wood frame for the body, but it's hard to tell unless we get a donor to cut up. I have one of those too. The bizarre thing is they appear to have a bolt on neck except that there are no screw holes! So it's probably glued in, unless they screwed it in and then put the fiberglass over the screw holes in the back.

The pickups are super low output, about 3K to 4K, they were designed specifically to be played through Standel amps. Through a Fender amp you can turn it up to 10 and hardly get any output. If you plug into a Standel they sort of sound like Les Paul playing direct into the board--super hi-fi, and really, really squeaky clean. Impossible to get dirt out of them. That's why I laugh when people call the Standel guitars "Mosritey"--I guess maybe a little in the cosmetic department but with Semie's overwound 13K and 20K pickups they couldn't be less alike.

They are definitely cool though, if you ever see one in a music store you owe it to yourself to try it out. The ones I have--2 solidbodies and 1 hollowbody are all really, really well made instruments. They're just weird, that's all!

The 1986 E.F. Elliott archtop has arrived. What a cool guitar. Heavy and resonant. Wide neck, 24-1/2" scale. Builder signed and dated visible through one of the f-holes. Mosrite knobs and switch tip. Previous owner added a Varitone and a switch (see hole above dial) that tapped the neck pickup. Luthier pulled the switch during a recent rewire, but I wish he'd kept it as a master bypass for the Varitone. Not a big deal, but I'll get that corrected.
