No serial number in 1964 ??

Postby Twelvs » Sun Oct 26, 2008 7:05 am

Is it correct, that a 1964 Mosrite did not have any serial number?

Err, no! This is not a '64 model as it states truss rod cover is missing, Mosrite didnt have truss rod covers at the head until 1966. Might be a MIJ?? I'm sure others have better info on what it could be but it isnt a '64....

Well, for starters, if that's a '64, then I'm Nokie Edwards  .
Why it's not a '64...
1) It's a very nice looking, but DEFINITELY not a REAL '64.
2) Neck Pickup looks to have the registered 'r' on the stamping.
3) Neck Plate has the regular screws, not the smaller ones.
4) No Jewel Knobs (lathed) this has the '66 on it.
5) No "Ventures" or "Joe Maphis" on Headstock.
6) Truss Rod is on Headstock, not near the Neck Pick-up.
7) Toggle switch is plastic, not lathed.
8) Dates were stamped in ink, not 'penciled in.'
9) Sumtin phishy about theeees her' geee-tar
I'll stop here, and let someone else add to this  ....

Not having a serial number stamp on the fretboard is a little puzzling unless it was sanded off during refret and fretboard leveling.

Kevin shows his twelve string Mosrite body in another post and it has writing in the neck pocket and no stamped mfg date. See photo's here. My 70's bass doesn't have anything written or stamped in the neck pocket, just bare wood where the hand held painting jig attached to the body.

Looking at the neck pocket it appears to have a little yellow showing in the deep corners. This would make me think it is a refin a long time ago, maybe Semie did it to cover a mistake in a sunburst. My gut feeling is this is more likely a 70's or 80's model.

Understood, but there have been discussions where we did recognize that it was not unusual for a guitar to get out
of the factory without a S/N every once in a while (maybe somebody not paying attention at the Factory?).

There have been a number of known cases where someone would 'pencil' in their name (maybe at a certain inspection point?).
My P.W. '65 has either Lyn or Lynn penciled in the neck pocket. But my original point was that the DATES were never 'penciled'
in from the 60s Mo's (or at least I have not heard about yet), they were always 'stamped' in ink. However, I do know that the
70's thru the late 80's, DID have quite a few production dates written in, but not all. BUT I'm referring to only the 60s models,
which brings us back to this '64 12 String ;) .

p.s. (my '65 does have a stamped date, my '72 Bass is in pencil, and my '73 Celebrity III is stamped, go figure! )

Maybe I wasn't very clear in trying to point out the obvious discrepancies. I'll be a little more succinct. It ain't NO '64.

The neck pocket on my body has the code embossed in there. It's T683 what ever that means. Kevin

The letter "T" means that it was going to be set up as a 12 String.... ;)

I can kinda make out two dates in that neck pocket. If you look toward the start of the neck pocket in between the neck screw holes it's stamped JUL-9-xxxx but there is also a signature and below it, it reads 9/27/xx
