Blue Ventures on the Bay

Postby mrmomo » Mon Jan 16, 2012 11:04 am

Hi All,

OK, I really, really, really want an original Mosrite!

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this ebay listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mosrite-Ventures-Mk-1966-Blue-Metallic-/170762168435?pt=Guitar&hash=item27c237e873

Is the price in the "reasonable" ballpark?
I enlarged the photo of the neck, but can't make out all the numbers. Something like...40x02?

If this is a keeper, I may pull the trigger.

Also, ebay related, I see a lot of vintage Mo's for sale by collector magicmarksy (Michael Marks). Are his prices in the original Mosrite ballpark? Maybe he's on this forum as well?

oops...I just realized the guitar will ship from Switzerland.
Additional costs: shipping, customs fees, taxes...hmmm...

It is gorgeous, but that's A LOT of money, even for me and living closer to Switzerland
Here's what I snagged, only recently  viewtopic.php?f=8&t=4514&hilit=kurokumo+super+excellent

You might just want to revise your expectations of a 'real' Mosrite ;)

Nice axe, Paul!

Yes, it is a lot of dough.
You have a good point and I may need to reconsider, but for now, it's fun to do some window shopping!

FWIW, check out the prices at Guitar Center vintage - they've got a couple of Mosrites around the country including a blue Mk 1 in Jacksonville for $2400:

Thanks, MWaldorf!

I actually sent an email to the Jacksonville, FL store about one week ago re: a Mosrite listing at their location, but never got a reply. They don't seem to list serial numbers, which is what I requested.
I even told them where to look for it.

I will probably need to call and speak with a live body.
I'll keep you all posted if anything materializes.

Given that it's Guitar Center, you'd probably be better off calling. I saw the two in the Hollywood store recently. The sunburst one has more wear and some altered parts but the red one is clean, only missing the vibrato arm, though it's a post-Ventures model.

Thanks. I spoke with Leroy at the Hollywood store last night. He sent me additional pics and I saw the broken trem arm, non-original chicken head knobs and a non-original G-string tuner that had been replaced. It has serial number 4636. So maybe 1966? He said he would pull a pot and let me know the date stamp.

I might make an offer of 2K since he said it has been sitting in the store for at least two years. Those items can be replaced.
Maybe I'll take it to Bob Shade for a once over. I'm only about a two-hour drive from his shop.
And 2K might not be a bad deal for it.
We'll see...
