Yeah, I know that Johnny held them together. I've watched it all. End of the Century & everything. I love Johnny Ramone. The squandered opportunity I was speaking of was that they would do albums toward the end of the 80s & into the early 90s on shoestring budgets because Johnny thought they wouldn't really sell anyways & they'd go on the road & do mostly stuff from the first 4 albums. If they would've had a record company that invested a littel more in them & a little more leeway to expand their sound, who knows what would've happened.
With all this stuff said, the Ramones have been my favorite band since I was in 5th grade in 1982 & will stay that way until the day I die. Johnny Ramone is the single biggest I even play guitar & the only reason I play Mosrites. W/ out him I would've never been introduced to such a kick @$$ guitar.

Re: Hallmark II Sheena model
Hindsight is always 20/20, especially someone elses not in the band. I personally thought Mondo Bizarro was the best record of their later years, Johnny hated it. They had the company behind it, etc. Nevermind came out and the whole grunge thing took over. There weren't a lot of record companies willing to put money into them. Some of the later 80's stuff, although having some great moments, was not always their best material so, not the best of arguments there by Mickey. There was unfortunately a lot of bad timing in their career, and not their fault. Even Danny Fields admitted his firing was deserved, after not getting any records sold. And subject matter, although perfectly acceptable to me, and quite funny, scared radio programmers. The 70's stuff was about as perfect as r'n'r can be. But the whole punk rock thing got more attention as a British thing, again, not their fault. But they left quite the legacy, didn't they. Try naming 1 Rattlers song. Not a big legacy there. But Mickey has a great voice, basically a copy of Joeys style, and had some good songs. Haven't read the book, would like to, but I'm gonna guess there might be a hint of jealousy in it.

Re: Hallmark II Sheena model
The book had some good info. There was a hint of jealously & a bit more bitterness. He focused on his relationship w/ Joey mostly. I'd like to hear Joeys side. Unfortunately we can't.
The book itself wasn't the greatest book ever written. Mickey definately had some axes to grind.
The weirest part was not even in the book. It was in the thank you's at the end. They (he & Legs) thank all kinds of folks. They thank Johnny, Markey, Johnny's mom, their uncle...everyone.....................except CJ. He was barely mentioned & only when it was completely necessary. Twice in the book, actually. The first was when Dee Dee quit & CJ joined & it was treated like a foot note & the second is when he stated that no one in the band went & saw him in the hospital after he broke his hip. They all knew he was sick cuz Arturo told them. This is kinda telling in it's own right.

I don't think you'll find better videos of the Sheena and Road to Ruin in use than Deke's Ramones tribute from the GGF. To my ears, these guitars run through that big Marshall stack nailed it.

Joey died in the hospital with his family there, Dee Dee tragically od'd and Johnny died at home surrounded by family and friends. Surving members still show up to celebrate Johnny and Joeys birthdays each year and raise money for cancer research. And if you watch the documentary, listen to what Johnny says about Joey "he was a Ramone, and I loved the Ramones". But they weren't friends. Too bad.
yeah, rocco, that was a strange moment to watch. like John wanted to say he loved Joey like a brother, but couldn't find the words to say it. strange indeed. but think of this. the beatles had bad blood at the end as well, but only lasted 7 years. The ramones lasted three times as long. pretty amazing when you think of it like that, I think.
I agree, I think Mondo is on of the best albums, a lot of people pass it up, which I have never understood why. there's not a bad song on that cd.

Re: Hallmark II Sheena model
How do the Sheena compare to the fillmore Ramones model you also have, and which of the two is the more versatile in regard of a wider use in different genera's do you feel (i'm thinking mostly about clean and/or "crunch" tones)?
And when it comes to the Ramones i have to say i like Johnny the best of the bunch, love the no BS attitude he had, he was never afraid to tell it like he saw it, even if that meant not being that well liked and that people would regard him as pri*k. I think for the most part he was the one that made sure the Ramones was and kept being the Ramones and never in a compromising manner. And you have to remember that in the "trashy" punk scene he was a person that collected baseball cards as a hobby and would rather go to his hotel room and eat milk and cookies after a show instead of shooting junk like most of his peers, he was also a firm conservative in a scene dominated by liberal hippie types. A true rebel amongst rebels, and probably the biggest misfit in a scene that prided them self in being misfits, but he kept his integrity and never compromised. For that he has my utmost respect, and admiration!
Gabba gabba hey!

Re: Hallmark II Sheena model
Ditto. As for the differences in the guitars, I have an original slab VenturesII and a Filmore Signature model. Guitars are very close, but definitely different: pickups, fretboard and especially the frets themselves. Haven't seen a Halmmark but, it looks and sounds right, much closer than the Filmore, for the early stuff. The fat strat made a hudge difference in Johnnys tone after he made the switch. Prefer the earlier tone.
