Thoughts on this 1966 MkV finish?

Postby sumlin » Tue Feb 12, 2019 11:38 am

Hi all

Your thoughts on the finish on this 66 MkV?

Image

I'm guessing a refin from a solid colour as the neck isn't sunburst and that black area is much bigger than it should be. But you might recognise the guitar and know more...

Thanks in advance

This one is B735 which is an early MK V as also evidenced by the truss rod at body end. MK V numbers start shortly before B700 (when the model was re-named from "Ventures II") and the earliest MK V on Max's list with a sunburst neck is B1050. The finish is strange however, it's the only one I've seen like it. Likely to be a refinish.

Update - refinished in 1969 by second owner who bought it with some damage to the original finish...

...and I'm nearly there with owning it.
Thinking I may re-refinish to the solid blue from the era. I have some queries about that but I'll raise in another thread...
