Slab body vs German carve size and specs

Postby Brendan Wanderers » Tue Jan 12, 2016 5:47 pm

Hello everybody, new to the forum here, I was wondering about the size difference of a german carve versus the slab body from 1965. the german carve "regular model" always seemed bigger in pictures. I know the german carve has a body size of 19"x14". Is the slab body slightly smaller, say for instance 17"x13"?

Hi Brendan,
you're right, a slab Ventures II body is smaller than a Ventures Mark I body: about 13 1/2" x 17 1/2" – hope that helps.
Cheers

Regarding the size of slab vs German type of Ventures II.

Is the following correct:

Ventures II gen 1 a.k.a "Slab version" a.k.a "Johnny Ramone version" is 17 1/2" x 13 1/2" ?
Ventures II gen 2 a.k.a "German carve version" is 19"x14" ?

If so, are the proportions not the same?
I.e. 17 1/2" is only about 92,1% of 19" but 13 1/2 is 96,4% of 14" ?

So, are my figures above incorrect or are the proprtions not the same OR is not even the design the same between these two Ventures II?
PLEASE let me know and PLEASE shot me some drawings/an outline if you have one for the slab version!

Nice collection !!

Yeah, It's the left one I'm looking for and it is the right one I found drawings for...
So clearly the body and headstock is smaller and has a somewhat different shape.
May I ask you to outline the left one with some reference measurement included?

It seems to me as though the Slab and Carved Ventures II are mostly the same outer dimensions; except, the Slab version's neck is farther out from the body and the Carved version has it farther in the body. The Slab version has a rectangular section of wood extending out, to support the neck. I don't have exact measurements, but that's how it seems to me based on pictures; just add more of a neck pocket to the outline of any Ventures II body, and you're set.

Of course, I could be wrong; I don't have exact measurements of a Slab Ventures II.

Also, I do know that some Slab versions had wood cracking in the neck pocket area, and that may explain why Carved versions had the neck recessed in the body so far. Maybe it's not too bad of an idea to use Alder or Sugar Pine for a Slab Ventures II Body.
