New member: I came for twang

Postby Vito » Sun Oct 21, 2012 11:33 am

Howdy folks. I've been a fan of The Ventures since the 1960s (I still have my vinyl discs!). I've never owned a Mosrite guitar, but I'm encouraged to find that there are some affordable replicas that appear to be close to the originals. I'm joining the forum in the hope that I can get some guidance that will help me choose a guitar I will love to play.

By way of true confessions, I'm addicted to clean twang. I built my own custom baritone Strat earlier this year, and now I'm in the hunt to satiate my long-time burn for the Mosrite tone...hopefully at price that won't have me living under a bridge. ;)

As an additional note, I've just read the "Attention: New Members Registering Please Read" post, and I'm greatly encouraged to find that the forum rules strictly prohibit discussion of "sex, politics and religion". (Actually, I'm not opposed to sex, but I agree that it has no place on a guitar forum.)

Thanks for accepting my membership to the forum!

Great to have you here Vito! Mosrites (and many of their clones) are great for twang, hopefully you'll find something that strikes your fancy. There's tons of info on the various Mosrites and clones if you use the search function.

Thanx, for the welcomes, guys.

I've been looking at all the choices that are available. Naturally, I'd love to have a "genuine" Mosrite (...notwithstanding the ongoing Mosrite wars), but the price tag of an original is prohibitive for me right now. So, it looks like I'm in for one of the look-alikes.

So far, I'm most impressed by Bob Shade's Hallmark 60 Custom in the price range I can afford. I haven't played one, but from what I can tell based on info I've seen on the web, it looks great.

Mel's M3 guitar looks great too — three pickups = heaven (...if I can say that without running afoul of the religious rant proscription). Don't know anything about its affordability though, but after watching Mel's demo of the sounds...YOW!! (Vito wipes drool from chin...)

Welcome to the forum Vito! You've actually come to the world of Mosrites at a very good time. There are more choices now for a Mosrite style guitar than ever. The MIJ Mosrites by Fillmore and Kurokumo are very accurate reproductions. The Hallmarks have the Mosrite vibe at heart with a few subtle changes for a more modern feel. There are also a few luthiers specializing in Mosrite style guitars - Ed Elliott, M-3 California (makers of my semi-hollow "Meshugga Mark III"), Gun Guitars in Europe, and a few up and comers on the forum here too.

Mel

P.S. There's a late '60s Japanese Mosrite Avenger on eBay right now with a very reasonable buy it now price. These are quality guitars. Also, I notice this one has the bridge pickup far enough back towards the bridge to have space for a middle pickup... :)

Oy vey - it's MESHUGGA BEACH PARTY - The world's premier Jewish Surf Music Band!

Hi Mel:

Thanks for your reply...and for that link to the Mosrite Avenger auction. I'd probably be all over it like white on rice if I actually had the bux right now. Alas, I don't, so I'm doomed to sit here and drool for the time being. Hey, wait...it's nighttime here in Californy now. I'll just step outside and wish upon a star...

p.s. I love MBP...you guys make me grin from ear to ear. :D
