Potential Mosrite owner in a few days

Postby fresco » Thu Jan 05, 2012 7:08 pm

Greetings Mosrite forum! Thanks for having me!

I've been searching for a new kind of guitar lately and I've come across Mosrite... I may be purchasing one from someone in the next few days and have been placed into a paranoia state with talk about knock-offs, partsrites, etc... so I've come to all of you to give me your two cents.

As a 'seasoned' guitarist (not too spicy), I realize it will come down to how it feels in my hands, but I thought I'd ask your opinion about it... Any thoughts? Any help or encouragement would be grateful.

Welcome!

As Canada is one cradle for partsrites you are right in being cautious. Even though the hangtag seems to authenticate the guitar, I see a few details that don't seem correct to me. If you like it and the price is right then knock yourself out, but I'd be wary of dropping big bucks.

I too see 4 or5 items that may be questionable. However, if the original customer
purposely S.O.'d the guitar in this manner, then this would be plausible..... ;) ....
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

Yes, it was a special order... I was going to drop about $1000 CAD on it. If it's a decent guitar, then I don't see the harm. Of course, I don't mind paying for something that I'm told *isn't* original than pay for something that is a big fib. Arg... Life as a guitarist isn't easy.... :?

Thanks for the responses so far!

At that price no harm indeed, but it never hurts to make an educated purchase.

There are several anachronisms. For example, the serial number on the tag is not that of an M88; the serial number is in a different format and is from 1987, before the M88 model even existed. On top of that the headstock logo is incorrect for the era. Some of the hardware also does not appear to be original Mosrite issue. It would be interesting to hear the current owner's take on this one's history.

Best of luck!

Not that I know much at all about original Mosrites, that odd shaped truss rod cover was the first thing that caught my eye. In fact, I don't remember ever seeing a photo of a Mosrite with any sort of truss rod cover. (not that they couldn't have existed - just don't remember seeing one).

Apart from everything already mentioned I'd be inclined to hold out for a more typical Mosrite with the German carve and the toggle switch in the usual Mosrite position. It's the little things that count with me.
