Thanks for the edumecation Sarah, I guess I know more about bound F holes in a guitar now than the average man in the streetSarah93003 wrote:Paul, I guess I didn't say that correctly. Semie evidently used regular binding in the beginning when making the Celebrity. At some point he switched to an injection molded plastic F hole and glued them in place.Veenture wrote:I always thought any guitar binding was always plastic. Fill me in Sarah, what's the material for true binding?Sarah93003 wrote:The F holes have true binding and not the plastic ones that came in the later Celebrities.

I have my suspicions on this guitar. There are things about this guitar that lead me to believe it is a Partsrite example.
First, the pickguard is not correct.
The control plate is the shape found on 1968 and earlier examples and yet when Semie did the Mosrite/Acoustic solid bodies I think that was in the 1972-1973. A Celebrity body from 1972 would have had the "banana" shape control plate and a Celebrity from 1973 would not have had a control plate at all.
The back of the guitar shows the neck mounting holes in the pattern for the peanut shaped plate, but this one has screws with washers underneath that look like upholstery washers or screw caps, not the bushings/ferrules used in earlier Celebrity bodies.
The truss rod cover is red tortoise shell while the pickguard and control plate are white plastic. I've never seen Mosrite do that combination. Usually the TRC is black, unless the control plate and pickguard are both tortoise shell.
The jack input, switchtip and knobs are not Mosrite.
I've never seen these tuners on a Celebrity.
The bridge on this guitar is practically touching the bridge pickup. I have never seen one that close.
There is no serial number on this guitar and no back pad (as on the Acoustic solid bodies).
In my opinion this guitar was made with left over parts, a Partsrite. It could have been a former employee who was given a box of parts, or even Semie was known to make a guitar from spare parts, but I don't think he built this one. If this would have been a prototype as the owner suggests, then I think it would have been really decked out and example of Semie's best work.

I don't think the guitar is posing as a Mosrite Celebrity. It is an Acoustic but there is definitely a Semie Moseley connection.
It could have been made by the Mosrite company for Acoustic.
Think of Semie Moseley's Acoustic Black Widow, for instance. Ed Elliot, Adam [dorkrockrecords] and others will know

but not every black widow has a mosrite connection. At least I'm told that semie was involved with the first serie of the balck widow. And that the most BW's have nothing to do with mosrite. Except maybe in the devolopment area

That is my understanding as well. I've read that Semie produced the first 200 solid bodies. No where has there been any evidence that he produced Celebrity based Acoustics. I am still convinced this is a Partsrite guitar.

According to this site Mosrite didn't make the first 200 solid bodies, They were somewhere towards the end of the line.

Hey Guys and Gals,
That Black Acoustic Brand Celebrity II Is a guitar I painted and put together
around 1977-78 for inventory for my shop "Elliott's Music" in Taft, California.
My Buddy, and official Mosrite silkscreen maker Bruce Wilson made me a screen
with the Mosrite logo on one end and the Acoustic logo on the other. So there's
2 or 3 of those Acoustic Brand Celebrities out there somewhere, I didn't want all Mosrites
and Dobros hanging in my shop, I had several of the Acoustic Black Widows I put
together out parts too."Give me a break" I was only 19 or 20.
All the Best!

Hey Eddy,
There is nothing wrong with that guitar and I hope I'm NOT sounding negative about it. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I could afford it. I think it's kinda cool, actually. What I'm saying is that the seller is suggesting that this was a prototype made by Semie. All I'm saying is that I thought it was a Partsrite and you've confirmed that. It's great to know the origin of these! I think this is the second one I've seen.
The fact that they have held up for 30+ years is a testament that they were well built, especially for a 19 year old! You can bet that as soon as I get my hands on all of the components necessary I'll be making my own Celebrity Partsrite. It will be my version or interpretation.

It's all good!
