80's - 90's Kurokumo '63 reissue

Postby hiflier » Tue Feb 09, 2016 1:18 pm

Hi all,
While looking for a Mosrite '63 reissue I have come across with the following guitar:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ho1g66vb5vv8o8/DS03174123_1.jpg?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/zo6ejg7r304cg8r/DS03174123_3.jpg?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/1j5fahnan2d1pdq/DS03174123_2.jpg?dl=0

The seller tells me it is a Kurokumo from the 80's or 90's but he can not confirm it to me since the guitar has no serial number on it.
Could you help me to identify it? If it was a 80's-90's Kurokomu, would you recommend it over the actual Fiillmores or Kurokumos?

I have the deal almost closed, but before that I would like to hear from you mates to be sure.

Thank you in advance for your help

It appears to be a Kurokumo '63 Royal. I wasn't aware they made them as early as they '80's. I thought they were made closer to the end of the '90's into the early 2000's. They are very well made with excellent action. I would only take issue with the brightness of the yellow paint in the center of the burst - but that was not uncommon with the '63 Royal. They were at least a couple of G's new back in 2000. -Marty

If it helps any, my Kurokomo doesn't have a serial number either.

Most Kurokumos don't have serial numbers, I had one just like the white one above and it was a great guitar. The '63 Royal should be their highest model. I prefer the Fillmore's as they are more vintage correct, concerning the body carve in particular but the kurokumo I had played just as good, and was cheaper.
I still find the 1966 original I have to have way more mojo, and better sound than the reissues but the reissues themselves are great guitar too, I say go for it, enjoy and don't look back! (and post pics)

Looks like my Kurokumo which has "Excellent" stamped on the tailpiece. I can't view the Dropbox pictures. Does this one have the same marque?

The first picture shows "Vibromute" stamped on the tailpiece.
