Thanks for your comments! My ol' frend Bill Gruggett told me when he
started working for Semie around 1961-62 they were building a batch
of about 20 of the Student models, I'm not sure how many got put together
and sold. I've only seen 2, the one Artie Niesen has, and a photo of a nother
one that on Tym's guitars website, Ive got a photo of that one.
Thanks,

All kidding aside, this design possesses an elegant simplicity melded to a complex shape that really makes one think...
Why didn't this design catch on?
Maybe Semie figured it just needed more bells and whistles, but I think 'It's ready now!'
How does one pickup in the middle sound? I'm guessing it sounds pretty good, as I usually use the in-between position on my Hallmark C60. I'm a big fan of the purest essence of a design with nothing extra, and I think this has all of the endearing elements of a Ventures-style, with nothing extra. If you took anything off, it wouldn't be complete, yet it doesn't need anything more.
I know what my bass player is going to say..."Is there a bass version?"
Uh-oh! Gotta go. My mouth's watering!

Twango,

I had a chance to play the original from Arties, and I was impressed with the tone. The central pickup location along with the aluminum bridge allow it to produce a pretty bright sound, and with the tone rolled off, you could get a more neck-like tone. It's not as versatile as a two (or three) pickup guitar, but it's got an impressive tonal range considering.

This makes me wonder if calling one of the guitars in the RS line a "Student" model makes any sense. Twango makes a great point about the elegance and economy of this design. It doesn't seem right to minimize those qualities by suggesting it's for beginners.

Since it's the genesis of the product line and a replica of the 1962 model that preceded the Maphis and Ventures models, how about calling it the RS-Proto? Other ideas?

Beautiful workmanship Ed, you have done your mentor very proud. Why not a "Semie" model perhaps, in honor of The Man himself?

Hey Surfrider.

I've thought about that, Loretta Moseley's Mosrite Guitars company
already calls there guitars the "Semie Moseley" model.

Back when I was just a teenager when
Semie would give me personal advice, He'd say Ed, I want to talk to you
like I'm your ol' "Dutch Uncle" now I'm not real sure what a Dutch uncle is, But I am sure it's
a good thing.
If down the road If I did a tribute model to Semie Moseley, I'm pretty set on calling it
"The Uncle Semie" model.

Handbrake,
I see what you mean,
I like the sound of the RS-Proto much better than the RS-Student, these little guitars are real players that no pro would be a shame to take on the stage and play all night long. And Yes, there is a Bass Version that perfectlly matches the guitar, available in 30 and 34 inch scale lengths with a flip mute on the bridge, like Semie put on Bob Bogle's very first Mosrite Bass. I'm thinking about painting the very next one a blonde or butterscotch with a black pickguard
Giving it that early Fender Esquire/Broadcaste-rish kind of vintage vibe.
What do you guys think???

Hi there Mosman,
Thanks!
Might you know of any guitar stores that would be a candidate
to be an E.F.Elliott dealer in the land down under??

Cheers,

Eddy
