Re: Tonal Quality of the USA Pickups vs Japanese Pickups
After experiencing the dreaded 'guitar drop' too many times myself, I've adopted the habit of ALWAYS having at least one hand on the guitar at all times.

The real tragedy is that I never did find the screwdriver that I was looking for.
I did find a different one and changed the pickup height, got the bass I was expecting.
Oddly enough after the initial shock, I'm not as upset as I thought I'd be.
I can live with body dings, but neck dings really bug me.
Here's the culprit.
A middle budget locking strap.
I usually use dimarzio straps, but I didn't want to alter my guitar with unscrewing the pins.
I guess I really should have. Oh well. I might fix it once I get more experience re-finishing guitars (I have three projects on the go currently).

Re: Tonal Quality of the USA Pickups vs Japanese Pickups
hey,
sorry about the accident, i feel ya. a good book to pick up on finish repairs is dan erlewine guitar player repair guide. but for a quick touch up on the dark edge is just color it in with a black sharpie marker, and wipe off any excess with a dry cloth right after. it doesn't take the dent away, but covers up the bare wood.
feel free to PM me about finish repairs if you like.

I can't imagine having a strap break like that... I always do two things when I get a new guitar; one, I order appropriately colored strap-locks, and two, I order a heavy duty, real leather strap to go with it. A buddy of mine has started building straps for me with nice wide, sheepskin lined shoulder pads...he is a harness-maker for draft horses...need I say more?
Just call me heavy-duty.

In my 20+ years of playing, this is the only strap I've ever seen break.
The strap looked and felt sturdy enough, so I didn't give it a second thought.
I mostly played the Mosrite sitting down and only stood up because my 21 month old daughter kept stealing my plectrums out of my hand. She's cheeky I tell ya!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune MissionBrown, however we might want to start a new thread with this,
being that we have drifted South with the original title of this thread....

Re: Tonal Quality of the USA Pickups vs Japanese Pickups
Since my guitar seems to be quite bright and is setup for 11-48 nickels, will I have any major issues by restringing it with 11-50 d'Darrio chromes (flat wound)?
I'm thinking it'll be minimally different, but I'd like to ask first, before I waste my time, finding out the hard way.
Currently it's strung with 9-46, so there's not a lot in the low end.

Well I put 'em on and it's more beefy, definitely a lot less bright.
They felt pretty weird ad first, but I'm liking them a lot!
Fatter strings have also really balanced out the vibrato, the height is right and the tension feels good.
