Bummer. I'd have just used Vice Grips to grab them, though. After that, replacing the screws could be done.
Similarly, the Saddle Screws on my 66 were also a bit goofy when I got it; I don't think they used the best quality screws at the time, at least for the cheaper models (which, mine was a cheaper one.) A good modification is to use Stainless Screws instead.
