Mosrite Celebrity - Opinion

Postby aebirkitt1972 » Mon Aug 03, 2020 5:52 am

Hello All,

I hope everyone is safe and healthy.

I have my eye on this Celebrity in a shop in Europe. It looks wonderful, but can anyone tell me if any of the parts are non-original? looking at the fantastic resources on this forum, i am pretty sure its all original. The only thing i'm doubtful about is the tuners and (obviously the price!)

Any opinion would be much appreciated!

Hi, welcome to the forum. To answer your question: It looks to be all original, and normal for a 1970s model. I can't speak for price so much, but do consider your location; there are few Mosrites in England.

Hello Andrew,

First, the tuners are original. The case looks to be the original Victoria Luggage case which are very nice, (and heavy). The switch tip is not original. They are easily found on eBay, however. There are some finish blemishes around the control panel.

The guitar looks very nice but I think it is a bit over priced. In the US the Swedish Krona conversion would make it $2,580.00 USD. I think you could buy a very nice Celebrity-I from the U.S. and have it shipped to you. I've shipped many and when packaged properly they arrive in good condition.

If it were me, I would go with this Celebrity-I from Reverb. It is a 1973 model with Mosrite humbuckers and phase switches. Very versatile.

This one is $1,750 USD plus shipping.

Hi Andrew,

That Gospel is quite nice but seems over priced to me. The Gospel Celebrities got the best hardware, but in this instance it has the cheaper Japanese tuners that Mosrite used when they did not have Kluson tuners. The bout is nice and thick and the neck attachment had four screws instead of three or even two. Everything else is very nice. Semie Moseley designed these for Gospel players and wanted them to be the best. Personally, for the price I'd go with the Reverb unit at half that price.
