Weird string problem with my original '65 Ventures

Postby Dickey » Sat Apr 07, 2018 2:42 pm

Hi; I have an original '65 Ventures model with a weird problem. After it's been on awhile, the high "E" string starts to detune & unravel itself at the Vibramute ball end, then it finally breaks. Only happens on the high "E". I do NOT use the vibrato & keep it folded out of the way. I have remedied the problem by buying a supply of .010s & soldering the twist end, but that seems like kind of a cheesy fix. Anyone have this problem, or know WHY this happens? Seems I read something about it on here but can't find it. Thanks.

I'm not sure how much more common it is on a Mosrite than any other guitar but maybe it's the brand of strings you're using. However, soldering an unwound string's wraps is called "tinning" your strings; it's not unheard of, D'addario sells pre-tinned strings as "Tremolo Strings." I tin all of my unwound strings whether or not the guitar has a vibrato unit, it's mentioned in a Stewart-Macdonald book and it works so why question it?
