S.P. letters on the serial number :what do they mean???

Postby muriel » Thu Nov 10, 2016 12:49 am

heck you all,

i have just bought in France a very lovely 1966 Combo 12 Mosrite, the serial number is G0083. But beside this serial number marked on the fretboard stands an extra mark : S.P. (on the next fret , indeed). These two letters appear on the inner label, just after the serial number.

does anyone know the meaning of this unusual SN extension ?

unfortunately i didn't succeed in publishing pictures on this topic...

Muriel,
Now you have my curiosity...
Do all of the characters look like they came from the same set of stamps?
It would really help if you can post a picture...if you upload your pics to a photo hosting site you can link them to your post...
Semie did a lot of customizing and personalizing on many instruments,
maybe someones initials?

SP=Semie Prototype??? :?
I believe Sarah had a Celebrity on her Website that
had the initials "SP" stamped into the fret board
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

hello , thanks for your answers, tomorrow i will try again to post my pictures. the S and the P are in my opinion very similar to the G in the beginning of the serial number, but yoy will be able to make your own opinion after i will have posted the pics.

nice propositions concerning the meaning of SP : why not Semie Personal ? ;)

i know from some other serials, that S was used for show guitars. maybe the stamp is for "show preview" "show promote" "show product" or something like that. but i can garantue this. maybe someone knows more about it :)

Good memory! In my humble opinion I do not think these are prototypes. The main reason being that there is nothing out of the ordinary with them. A prototype would have some innovation or some feature never done before. When I spoke to Andy Moseley about my Celebrity prototype he was very clear in telling me they only made five Celebrity prototypes, cut one of them apart, and the remaining four kicked around the factory and eventually disappeared. The one that I have has several features that are not found on any other Celebrity that I've collected data for. In fact, my Celebrity has the prototype of the Moseley tremolo. So, I kinda got two prototypes for the price of one. :D Incidentally, my prototype Celebrity does not have a serial number at all.

Some of the "oddballs" that I've discovered include "SP", "SPM", "ST", "SPK", all as prefixes before the number. I've often wondered if these were "partsrite" guitars with a persons initials. Guitars for NAMM would also make sense.

I came across a "Gospel" with the serial number "K2228G". A brass plate, the "Gospel Plate" was attached to the headstock covering up the original Mosrite logo. It was simply a Celebrity-III. My best guess on this one is a Gospel whipped together to give to a church, etc.

Another one I came across is W0259A. I don't have a clue what the "A" is for on this one. It is a stock guitar and not special in any way. So, although I find these anomalies interesting, I don't get all excited about them.

bonjour Sarah,

merci beaucoup. Mosrite guitars are very rare in france, and i have not seen enough of them to know if it has something different with another stock Mosrite, that's one reason for me to ask for an advice on this site...

today i will clean the guitar very precisely, maybe i will find some clues under the pickguard ...

today the enigma remains....

have a nice day...
