The sad fate of Mosrite Celebrity-A0076

Postby Sarah93003 » Tue Jul 12, 2016 11:56 am

This guitar was listed in April of 2016 on eBay and did not sell. It was listed again in June of 2016 and sold for $1,000 on July 6, 2016. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mosrite-Celebri ... 7675.l2557

A seller, Gibsondependable, has dismantled the guitar and put the parts on eBay. I don't understand the logic of spending $1,075.00 for the guitar and shipping just to tear it apart and list the parts for a total of $1,260.00. I did not see the bridge listed. I don't see the sense of ruining a vintage guitar just to make $200. He will still have to pay eBay fees and PayPal fees.

On the inside I am appalled by this behavior and there seems to be a growing list of sellers who are willing to do this. Is it worth it? I'm going to go say a little prayer now for A0076.

Like they say, "The sum of the parts, is greater than the whole." Or something similar. Still, wrong.
There is a special place in heck for people like that. LOL
Someone with the extra cash should contact them and offer to buy the guitar in one piece for his parts asking price.
But therein lies the problem. No one thinks the entire guitar is worth that much. One day someone will say I could have bought one like that for $1,260.00 back in the day.

I think you are right on. I try to keep an open mind but, this activity just rubs me the wrong way. The people who do this to perfectly good guitars I am certain justify it in their mind as they can make a couple of hundred bucks for and hour or two of effort. I am also certain they don't see anything "wrong" with it. It just makes me sad every time I see it.

I see they are doing it to drums now too. So you can buy the lugs, shells and rims as single items. I could understand it if they are basket cases, but man. Who is going to buy just shells?

I used to have a small collection of 16MM films. What would really bug me, and was done to just run up the price, some would sell the individual reels of a movie, so a 3 reel movie would be in 3 separate auctions. So if someone only needed reel number 2, they could bid it up./ If you wanted the entire film, you paid a premium, OR worse you ended up with 2 of 3 reels.

Yeah I saw a guy do this to a vintage Mosrite a couple of years ago on ebay. It upset me so much that I decided to write the guy to try and explain that what he is doing is wrong, so wrong. Let's just say he didn't appreciate it.

I think I can kind of see it with drums. Some of those old hoops and lugs are junk, but the shells might be really nice wood. If the bearing edges are still good, plopping some new lugs and hoops on those old shells could yield some really awesome drums.

It's about the same in the Station Wagon world with demolition derbies. On one hand I felt pained seeing a really nice looking 1975/1976 Impala which had been refinished in a derby guy's yard. Still, I don't mind some of the cars being wrecked (mostly the ones that look too far gone to restore) and I realize they're just material possessions which can be remanufactured and I shouldn't get bent out of shape over it; that's just a waste. Not everything can be duplicated though.
