neck problem

Hi,

Had a couple of Mosrite copies and sold them 'cause they didn't feel 100% good. Bought a refinished one that is THE one; feels great, sounds amazing, and took the neck off to see the year, and it's a 1965 ! Stamped on the neck, body and pots.
Now put the neck back on (4 screws) and the string height is double as high, the neck went banana...any advice, help ?

There was probably a shim in the neck pocket that fell out. Check around the floor where you took off the neck.

there was one at the end of the neck that makes contact with the body, but not around the neck - is that normal ? No nothing fell out.

I'm not sure what you mean by "around the neck" but I'd say it's about 100% that the guitar had something under the neck heel that tilted the neck back if the action was fine before you removed the neck. If you can't find it, it's not the end of the world. A new one can be made very easily.

When you refitted the neck, did you make sure it was pressed hard against the body while turning in the screws and so avoiding the making of an unwanted 'air shim'? Is the neck completely flush with the body? i.e. do both parts make 100% tight contact with each other? Just a thought...

Sounds just like me...every time I take something apart for curiosity, I end up with parts left over after it's back together! I agree with all of the above suggestions:

1. Make sure the neck is fully fitting into the pocket in the body, and the screws are snug, but not over-tightened.

2. Be absolutely certain that not even a tiny piece got away after you took it apart! A very tiny shim can make a dramatic difference to the neck angle, and therefor the action of the assembled guitar.

Took it to a luthier who fixed it and set it up - wow this is really some guitar !!!
Th refinish is ugly white, so I'd like to have it done in pearl white, any suggestions ?
Also the tone pot is crackling and not subtle at all - I work all the time with my amps pretty loud and my guitar knobs, any suggestions for a nice tone pot ?

Someone may have replaced the tone pot with a linear taper pot instead of an audio taper pot. You could first try cleaning the pot with something like the TV tuner cleaner from Radio Shack and see how it works before replacing the pot. I don't know what value pot you would need but I'm sure there are others on here who would know what pot is appropriate for the stock pickups.
