59-62 Joe Maphis pre Ventures model

Postby dubtrub » Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:13 am

I've about exhausted all possibilities of ever finding any, much less decent photo's of the 59-62 Joe Maphis model that predated the Ventures model. About three years ago there was one for sale on eBay and had a series of outstanding photographs which I saved to my computer. Unfortunately I never backed up my down loaded photo's, so all was lost when everything crashed and I bought a new computer. ( I still don't back anything up)

I have seen a couple of small photo's of the guitar in question on Tim's website , but I would like to find larger and better quality images of that guitar. I had an old Vintage Guitar magazine (the old newspaper size) from the 80's that had a photo on it's cover but it has finally gone by the way side. If any one knows where I can find some photo's please let me know.

Maybe one of you collector's have that guitar I saw on eBay.

Thank God for Tymguitars...this is courtesy of his Website.....
Check Mosrite (Early Years) Page #4.

This also includes the "Mistake Plate" around the Trem System, early Guild knobs (even B4 the Black ones!) which are also too close together, and the Nut is nothing more than an 'extra' fret.Headstock is also not the "offset angle" style......
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

Dennis,

I already had that link posted in my first post at the top of this page. Click on the blue lettered "Tim's Website". That's a 'hyperlink' that connects directly to the website. ;)

I'd like something a little larger and better for our files here on the forum.

Here's a photo I obtained from the Ventures model Serial number website. This is little later version of the guitar I was referring to in my original post. Now if I could only find more showing various up close details. Notice the neck at the 22nd fret is squared off instead of angular. Also the headstock "M" is not angled and is cut significantly deeper. Although you can't see it in the photo, but the edge all along the lower bout is convex instead of concave. Different knobs and selector switch tip also. This one is dated 1959 and the pots are dated '58. So I guess the 'mistake' vibrato dates even earlier. However, on Tim's website the 'mistake' version he dipicts is said to be dated around 1961.

This is the 'mistake' vibrato from Tim's website. Notice it also has the rounded pickups and appears to not have pickup rings.

Yeah, I got a copy of that issue off eBay hoping it would have some good info but other than that cover photos the inside story was not as good as most information readily available on the internet. I know a vintage guitar collector here in Bakersfield (Marc L---) has one of those guitars. I'm hoping maybe either he or another collector can provide some good photo's. I also sent Tim an email inviting him to join us on the forum but I guess he and other's of Mosrite fame that I have invited have a real busy schedule. ;)

Danny,
The old newspaper size was the one I was referring to. There's only one BIG PIC of the '59 Joe Maphis Guitar......The copy you got off of E-Bay, was that the newspaper size, or were you referring to the reg. Magazine size (later issue)?
