Mosrite bass questions

Hey,Zak--in regards to Paul's black bass being louder than the sunburst,could the difference of the strings(flatwound vs roundwound) be the reason?,Also since I couldn't see it from the pix does Paul have bridgecovers on the basses..

I think they initially both had roundwounds on them. And yes, bridge covers for both basses, although the one on the black bass is a repro from zamminc.

Ahh! OK Zak, so another words, both of Paul's Mosrites had Roundwounds originally, but the one was still louder than the other?

Yeah, when he got them they both had moderately light roundwounds. I was actually a little surprised at the differences between the two basses, both sound and feel. The sunburst definitely has a slimmer neck, too. You feel it right away when you pick it up. Through his rig the sunburst has a little more definition, but the black one has this merciless low-mid "oomph" that'll cut through anything. It may very well be the best sounding electric bass I've ever heard.

Ok OK...after a lot of procrastination I finally joined this forum...Zak got the best of me!

I wouldn't say my black Mosrite bass is any louder than the sunburst. I actually find them quite similar. Thing is, I had different strings on both of them. I find flatwounds cut through better, which would give the impression that the outputs are different. I like the sound of roundwounds on Mosrite basses, but they just don't have the "meat" flatwounds do in a live situation. You must keep in mind the band is actually quite loud compared years past. Now, with 2 guitar players running Dual Showmans and a Farfisa blaring through an insanely loud solid state Leslie, I found my bass getting lost in live situations....even running it at 7 or 8! I didn't have this issue before the other guys in the band switched to Showmans. Soundmen have referred to us as "a wall of sound". At the time, my black one had flats and so it was the go-to bass. I can see where Zak got that impression. So to some it all up, I would say it was more of an amp issue more than anything else.

So, how's that Sunn Coliseum working out? Have you found the "brown sound" yet? If you guys get any louder, I think I'll be able to hear the concerts from California.

Never thought I'd see the day where I'd have to retire the Showman. Scary indeed. If this amp does what I think it'll do, I'm in for a really good time.
