Newspaper.

This is the one I got off Ebay. Do you know of different one I could get?

Yeah, that's the newspaper one that I have too. I guess I misunderstood.
I thought there was another (later) copy floating around.....

..and here's another. If you look close, it doesn't appear that the output jack is mounted on a plastic plate as on the later versions.

Dig Joe's 10 gallon hat. :D

Hey Danny and Dennis, when you consider what I've been going through this week in the world of Mosrites, it's not fair to post pictures like that. darn!

So, how many "mistake plate" guitars are there? What exactly is the change that was made to fix the mistake? Was the neck pocket too deep, or was the vibramute casting too tall? You'd think that the mistake would have been figured out pretty quickly and the adjustments made, but depending on what was changed, it might have been a quick fix (neck pocket) or longer fix (vibramute casting change). So, if there were a few guitars in process before the issue was discovered, could there be, what, three or four of these? A dozen?

Mel, the numbers I heard were between 15 and 25, but who REALLY knows how many? However most of these particular guitars were made specifically for Bob Crooks of the Standel Amplifier Company in California. The story I remember were these specific guitars originally were NOT fitted with the tremelo system. When the deal with Bob Crooks fell through, because of some investors changing their minds, Semie had discovered that the neck pocket was not correctly cut for the TREM System, so he had to make adjustments to save those guitars. (GOD, I wish I could trip over one of those in a Pawn Shop!! ). Thus, the "Mistake Plate" was born.

Dennis is correct. The retro fit solution was to counter sink or inlet the vibrato assembly deeper into the body. In order to help conceal this modification, pickguard material was shaped and fitted around the vibrato plate. If you could find one of these guitars, the price would be upwards of $50,000. If you are a gambler then search yard sales and estate sales and maybe with a one in ten trillion chance you may discover your treasured 'mistake plate' guitar.

Although this is not a Joe Maphis model but a 63 side jack model, it does show a good view of the convex curve I was mentioning earlier in this topic.

JFYI, I'm getting these photo's from a disc of photo's I have saved over the years. Unfortunatley I didn't get chance to save them all. I had about three hundred more pictures of early Jazzmaster's, Duo Sonic's and tweed amps that was lost.

Interesting photo. Any idea what the story is on the pickguard? It looks like it overhangs the body by the neck pocket.

Yes, it does over hang. Even on my all original '64, the pickguard over hangs in the curved horn area.
