Rare Mosrite?

Picked up this '65 Combo the other day for cheap. I've never seen a combo with what I'm assuming is a vibramute? I'm not sure. Handle isn't original. Neither is the truss cover. Everything else is. All parts have made in California stamps. I've also never seen a "combo 6". I know Mosely threw together what he could to sell, but he still had some structure. Would think someone has seen another one of these?

Very nice! I checked out mine, it's serial # H1210, and only says "Combo" on the label inside the body.

Yeah that's what I mean. Haven't seen another combo 6. And setup like this too. Oh well, who knows

-- Semie was known for many anomalies in his guitar building days, and he also made combo basses for a time, so perhaps it was just a stroke of a pen on a paper label to denote guitar or bass. There are a few non original parts there, ie the truss rod cover and trem bar, but you got it at a nice price point. I'd guess you may be able to get proper looking versions of those things from Bob Shade if you want to make it look more 'right'. I think if you can live with the bar, it's probably pretty good as it sits. Looks nice anyway. How does it play? I nearly bought it and if I recall it had a refret at some point in it's past, correct? Curious if they are taller and how that is...

That's not a Vibramute, it's a Moseley. Vibramutes were earlier on; the vibrato unit on my Ventures II is a Moseley. I've seen pics of a few Combo models with full Moseley (with the baseplate) vibratos, though I've more commonly seen ones with a vibrato like what's on a Hallmark 60 Custom. I think Sarah even has a Celebrity model with a vibrato that says "Vibramute" on it, though it doesn't have the baseplate.

Right you are StevieSTL... In my post regarding front porch music, there is a photo posted by Desert Surfer (thanks again for the pics) showing a R/W/B Combo bass, cool indeed!

I've seen a lot of variations on the label just within the Celebrity family. Employees at that time were able to go with their own preference. I've seen a run of serial numbers where some were labeled as "Archtop" and others as Celebrity. Sometimes they didn't have the orange oval and used a white rectangle.

As for the full trem plate, here is a Celebrity-I with the Moseley.




Austin is correct. Some of you may recall the Celebrity prototype that I have. It is the only Celebrity that I've seen with a Vibramute half term.





This prototype has a couple of other features that never appeared on the production versions. I think there is a thread somewhere with details of this guitar.
