Hi from Slovenia

Postby Happy_tom » Mon Feb 11, 2013 4:18 pm

Hey y'all. My name is Matija (Matthew), I live in Slovenia. That's between Italy and Hungary, under Austria and above Croatia. :ugeek:

Unfortunately, Mosrites are exceptionally rare around here, so I never seen or played one, not even a cheap copy.
So the reason I registered here is I wanna build one myself.
I've seen some impressive builds on this site, but me being a student on a tight budget, I wanna do it a bit differently ( = ultra cheap!!!)
I saw a build on the net where someone made Johnny Ramone's ventures II clone out of a MDF board and an old LP copy neck. :o

I wanna do something similar, I'll use a cheap SG copy for neck and parts, but I wanna build a mk1, becouse of Fred Smith of MC5 and Dave Alexander of the stooges, among others. ;)

It'll probably be closer to Univox Hi flier specs in the end, which is OK by me, becouse Dimitri Coats plays one and he's directly responsible for pushing me over the edge and starting this project. (I like Kurt Cobain too, but he's more responsible for my Mustang g.a.s.)...
So far I only bought a cheap router and some other cheap tools; and studied which 'donor' guitar should be the best. I'll probably do it in a month or two when I have more time.
The plan is to do the whole project for under 150$ (not counting tools, of course). If my calculations are correct, it's possible, but you gotta wish me luck :D

Welcome Matthew. If you have questions about your build, please ask. There are many fine people here that I'm sure would be willing to help!

Hi Matija, and welcome! I picked up a Left Handed Mosrite copy body from ebay for a little over 70 dollars, very nice body, there is also a Right Hand body on ebay from the same seller, you might want to check that out.

Hey, thanks :) I might check it out, although I have more trouble finding a proper neck than the body, and I can't make a neck from scratch at home...
They said it's a slow forum, but I'm glad to see there's actually quite a lot of activity. ;)

Anyway, here's the project that inspired me: http://www.jag-stang.com/forum/topic/3871-mosrite-project/

I wananna do something similar, except I'll use 2 18mm spruce shelves from the local hardware store, they cost only a few bucks.
I bet it's no worse than MDF or plywood, and it should be easier to work with.

If it turns out OK, I' can always make another one from basswood.

I made this poster to study the differences:

These Harely bentons only cost 88€, and I can use all the pieces.
I bought a HB Les paul with P90s recently, and for the price it's a helluva guitar. It's not perfect and I had to sort out the 'bugs', but for the price I really didnt' expect such a nice guitar.

The black one is an older model with the neck set much deeper into the body. I hope to get the newer one, should make my job easier...
Anyway, I'll try to make a decent body, and I already have some experience with making pickguards + I have a spare set of P90 from that Les paul, becouse I put mini humbuckers in it.

The rest will resemble a Univox more, and I'll just skip the tremolo and put a hardtail on it.
I'll post it on the forum when I get started, probably next month or so. Unless I find an even cheaper guitar to massacre before then... :)
