Hi all - I obviously just signed up & joined the forum.

I am based on Central Coast of NSW Australia

I just purchased a late 60's Mark V Mosrite guitar - I think its a '67 based on the serial number and the info provided elsewhere on the forum

Picked it up today - the whole customs thing took some time (nearly 3 weeks from purchase) !

I am a musician and songwriter and liked the look and sound of Mosrite's (e.g. Ricky Wilson B52's killer riffs on his Mosrite) and rather than investing in an old Fender or Gibson et al - thought I would go down the lesser trod Mosrite route

Unfortunately the bolt-on neck had to be taken off the body for shipping purposes from the US to Australia.

When I tried to attach it today I noted that the upper bass side of the neck sits out of the neck pocket a few more mm than the lower treble side? Is this normal for Mosrite bolt-ons?

Anyway that is as far as I got as I then noticed that the little plastic? or wooden? shim thing which sits under the neck in the pocket was missing - I could clearly see its imprint but it appears to be missing. When I went back into the seller's site and looked at the photos of the guitar I bought I could clearly see the shim sitting there in the neck pocket so I have contacted them about sending the original or a replacement if possible? I assume you need this but is it actually essential to set the neck properly? Can you get them anywhere in Australia or make one yourself - if so what material should I make it out of and what depth?

I have taken the neck back off the body and will wait until further advice before I set it up -

I'm no luthier but it sounds like a lot of variables are involved here that would require assessment 'in the flesh and up and close'. I would imagine a luthier near you would have no problem taking care of this issue. Concerning the neck sitting out of the neck pocket, take into account that guitar-making tools and machines ín the sixties made for tolerances considerably less tight compared to today's hi-tech guitar manufacturing methods. To help you get get a specific response it might be better to repost you question in the project section. Also it would be great help if you could post photo's to help clarify your problem.

Yep thanks to all. Not sure how to repost or put photos up as have never used a forum before. The images are only stored on my laptop and not on a server so maybe I can't do?

Anyway I read another useful thread on the forum about using a variety of substances as shims including playing cards, foil, picks, thickness gauges, metal washers and wood, so I will have a go with that and try and set it up and see how it plays. If no luck I will take it to a local luthier as suggested. cheers
