proud mosrite owner

Postby connie_mack » Sat Oct 10, 2009 5:05 am

hey.
i just recently bought a '65' ventures I model. i thought about buying a new one but i have been a big ventures fan for almost 30 years and just had to go with a vintage(i have many other vintage instruments). i had always known about mosrite guitars since getting into the ventures but had never played or even seen one. that is, until 1993. i had forgone the 6 string guitar and was playing the pedal steel as my main instrument. the zumsteel that i had bought new wasn't so thrilling for me and i much preferred my 78' emmons. then a fellow steel player made me an offer...he would trade me his emmons(blond, birdseye maple with wood necks 72') AND a 1988 mosrite signed by semi on the back of the body. man, i fell in love with that guitar. it was like driving a mercedes after driving fords all your life. sadly it was stolen from me only a year later and i was never the same. i found myself telling this story alot recently and then went and saw los straitjackets and thought "what the heck". so i sold a couple of my banjos and bought a mosrite again. it's just like i remember. only this one is a sunburst. the 88' was white.
just thought i'd join to pick up info on this thing of ours. thanx.

Welcome and what a story about that 88 Model. Do you know which model it was? There were two 1988 models that were special to that year, The M88 and V88. The M88 didn't have a pickguard, The V88 did. I'm not sure of any other differences. Here's a few pics.

M88 (White, like yours)

V88 (Red, Sorry for the huge picture)

In fact, There are only about 50 or 60 M88 models (Or so I read) So if yours was an M88 The one in the picture could actually be yours. I don't know how many white M88s are around but the chances are there.

hi guys

101volts. i don't think the mosrite i had stolen was either one of those models as it had the german cut in the face. maybe my memory is off about the year(although i seem to remember semie writing 88 after his signature...) my memory is that it was like the mark I (not sure if i've got the right model number here as i am confused about all this info) in other words, it looked like my ventures model with out the ventures logo and white instead of sunburst....

i wish i knew more of the provenance about that guitar. if i ever run into that steel player again, i'll ask him if he knows......

Welcome aboard.

I do believe that in 1988 the Mark1 was still being made. It was a higher priced model from what I remember.

Hi connie_mack, my association with Mosrite started with The Ventures model which was pictured on many a Ventures album during the sixties as you will know yourself and I've learned a lot since joining here...there's more to Mosrite than meets the eye ;) Welcome aboard.
