Strings with a wound G

Postby Tronman » Mon Dec 05, 2016 6:07 am

I'm planning on replacing the current strings on my 65 Custom with a set of GHS DYXL Guitar Boomers. Has anyone used these strings on their Hallmark? I'm wondering if any adjustments may be needed to the pickup poles or to the neck/bridge.

I doubt you will need to make any adjustments. If you do it would be minor. Keep in mind the additional spring in the case. May need to use the heavier spring to get the feel you like.

Chime in guys!

Best, Bob

Thanks, Bob. I hadn't thought about possibly having to change the spring.

How much heavier gauge are the strings you are changing to. Is there a possible need for slight truss rod adjustment ?

I'm not changing gauge. I'm just going from a plain G to a wound G. I've heard that a wound G doesn't have as strong an output as a plain G, so the pickup poles may need adjusting. Also, the additional tension could require a truss rod adjustment.

Doubtful you will need a rod adjustment.

Yeah, I wouldn't think so. The way wound G strings are made nowadays, they don't seem to have the stiffness that the old ones had.
