Hallmark Ventures II slab styled pickups

Postby SeanTheFunky » Sat Jan 29, 2011 11:18 am

Right so i've placed a deposit on a Cassanova 'Chainsaw' (More or less a Mosrite Ventures II slab) thats being made for me by Mikethemod1992 and he's using the Hallmark copy pickups in the guitar (the same ones used in the Sheena and Road to Ruin). So can anyone give me an idea of what these pickups sound like when NOT thrashing through Ramones tracks? I've been playing a lot of surf, ska and skate punk recently so if anyone knows what they sound like for those kinds of genres or anything else then please comment :!:

Also I'll be running this through a small fender amp

Thanks folks
Sean

I imagine they sound similar to this. (Clean guitar starts at 1:40, The Ramones cover is at 5:00)

Youtube videos aren't the best way to find out what guitar pickups sound like though.

Hi! The guitar in the video is mine, and I made the pickups. The pickups in the blue guitar are somewhat darker sounding than the ones Hallmark makes because I wound them pretty hot. If you find a video from that show where Deke is playing the white guitar, that is a Hallmark. I actually think the Hallmark pickups sound better, dead on for the Ramones sound, and they have a little twang in them when used clean, but with more heft than a Strat or Jazzmaster. I dig 'em!

Allrighty then! Funny bit there, with the Voice of SpongeBob ragging on pre-punk '70's rock. Yes, there was some cheesy stuff out then, but Boston's "More Than A Feeling" and Journey's "Lights" not rockin' enough?? Come on now! If the guy on guitar had tried playing those intros with something resembling the dirty sounds used on the originals rather than the clean sound he used, (and it's a good clean sound, by the way, just not really suited for those tunes) I think you'd find that stuff would rock too. It wouldn't have been as funny, though...
