So, the Moseley vibrato plate was cast both in aluminum and brass? Did it start as brass in the 60s and become aluminum later or is it haphazard? The one I have on my VIII is definitely aluminum, and while I know it could stand more polishing, I don't know that I could ever get it looking like chrome.

Mel, I'm not certain, I believe the Moseley plates were all cast of brass during the 60's factory production years. In later years when Semie was down to a one man operation, I think he went back and forth sand between casting aluminum and brass as both styles have surfaced in later models. Since I'm not familiar with the economy line of Ventures II and Mark V's it's quite possible that this would have been a money saver by not having the added cost of chrome plating brass, but again this is just my thoughts.

Maybe BobK will chime in on this, which is an interesting question. Because I thought that the VERY EARLY
Mosrites that Semie was making in the late 50s and early 60s were of aluminum. i.e. the protos for the
early Joe Maphis/Ventures Body style and the Standel Guitar. As Mosrite got under way, they were using
the Brass for a little more sustain.........

Yes they were aluminum, as were all early Vibramute vibrato systems. What I was referring to was the Moseley vibrato system. Even some of Semie's later Vibramute's of the 80's were again cast in both brass and aluminum as were the Moseley's. But in the late 50's and early 60's Vibramute's were only cast in aluminum.

Ah! OK. The Moseley Plates were actually Pot-Metal. This might also be
the reason you occasionally see guitars with broken Vibrato arms, as they
too were being stamped out of Pot-Metal for a time....

Hello to all,

As i could see in the pics, the custom 60 is a real beauty. I 'm just wondering, which colour would be my favorite. the hallmark homepage is not really helpful to decide.

Has anybody a candy ink. blue one ? I'd really like to see :P .

You will be able to see one not too far down the road, as Dubtrub (Danny) is BUILDING a Bass that he promises is going to be Blue. But honestly, I'm not sure if he said whether or not he was doing a Candy Blue or not, but that would be sweet. ;)

yes- you can see on the hallmark page that "candy ink blue" is one of the colour options, they offer. maybe it is brand new and nobody has one so far 8-) . I'm a fan of white with tortoise Pickguard, but candy ink blue makes me very curious. I'll watch out for your pics :)

I have a Pearl White w/tortoise pickguard - it is a very striking guitar ... white on white binding ... a real keeper - IMHO
