B52s Covers Band

Postby sumlin » Tue Dec 24, 2013 6:45 am

Hi all. Going to get shot down by some of you more skilled riffers I am sure but I help do a charity covers gig each christmas where the bands have to keep their set a secret. This year the band I play in (nothing like the B52s ordinarily) roped in some friends and we did a B52s set. The many posts on here about Ricky Wilson's tunings were a huge help and I ended up with 3 guitars for 4 songs. I converted a Fender Jag for Rock Lobster and used Univoxes (Univii?) for the others. I cheated on Idaho and tuned up the D to an E as well (EBE BB) and I did Planet Claire in standard but it was a blast. No soundcheck, plenty of booze and I ripped my fingernail off about halfway through Lobster (taking one of the high F strings with it) but hopefully the fun translates and we raised a ton of cash for charity. Merry Xmas!

That sounded good. What gauge of strings did you use for Rock Lobster?

I went with a 58 for the low C, a 42 for the F (though if I did it again I'd go a bit heavier as it was moving about a bit compared to the 58) and then plain 20s for the two higher Fs. Before I put the Jag back to normal I might do a little video of the parts as it took me an age to work out some of the little subtleties. RIP Ricky!

Thanks and yes, Ricky did play parts that I found escaped my ear for the first I-don't-know-how-many-times I listened to B-52's songs; It's like the guitar parts are ambidextrous and he drew a square with one hand and a circle with the other. A video of you playing just Rock Lobster would be appreciated too.
