Mystery Train

Postby Sarah93003 » Sun Aug 28, 2011 8:39 pm

I discovered that my digital camera also makes movies. Who knew! So, I decided to make my very first video. The sound quality isn't the best, but oh well. I felt a bit awkward knowing that it was running in the background. Weird, I know. Now that I know I can do this I'll make more of them. This one is in response to a challenge on the Gretsch-Talk forum. It is my version of Mystery Train. I discovered quickly it is difficult to sing and play this one at the same time. Usually I play rythm when I sing it.

Here tis:

Very nice, Sarah! The train-whistle sounds on the harp were a nice touch!!! I also liked seeing your guitars and pedal board.

I have been working my way through Jim Weider's two-volume rockabilly DVDs, and that is one of the songs. He shows the Scotty Moore version and The Band's Robbie Robertson's version, too.

These DVDs aren't done in a conventional guitar lesson style, but are wonderfully informative and Weider discusses his guitars, amps, and the various players who've influenced his great playing.

It's almost like you're spending time at his house or something; very laid back and informal.

Scotty Moore is my main guitar hero, and I constantly hear different aspects to his playing that are just astonishing.

More videos from you, please!

Thank you Jim. I'm a huge Scotty Moore fan. This version is closer to Danny Gatton's version. After I learn a song I always like to twist it a little and make it my version, or at least make it a little different to suit my tastes.

Now that I know I can record these I will do some more. I didn't realize how difficult this one is to sing and play at the same time. There are some SRV songs I like to play that are equally difficult to play and sing.

Thank you Danny, Mel , and Paul.

Thank you Byron. That's Rosie, a Gretsch G5120. I bought her the day my father passed away so there is a sentimental attachment. It's not my "go to" guitar at all but it has it's own charm.

Good job! From what I saw of your room, it looked pretty "hot" acoustically...if you have a room with soft furniture carpeting and heavy drapes, the highs won't bounce around quite so much... Sometimes getting the sound to sound the way you want can bee the biggest part of the task of recording. 8-)

Thanks for the tip! I'll experiment with that. :)
