I come down with Olrocknroller on this issue. If a guitar isn't original, that doesn't bother me. If it isn't usable or doesn't play nicely, that bothers me.

Al, I think you might want to re-title this thread as the: Mosrite VIII that Will Be.....
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

Re: Mosrite VIII that Could Be
I think you approach is right on. Whenever possible I will choose to keep something original but if that can't be the case then I would mod to my hearts content and be happy with my little creation. There are different levels of collecting for sure. I would not expect that the guitars that I can personally afford will become fantastic investments. As long as I don't lose money in an acquisition, I'm fine with that.

That's what's described as healthy thinking in my book and speaking of books, I see there are more folks who are on the same pageolrocknroller wrote:If I find a guitar that is "vintage" but altered, incorrect, or damaged such that the restoration will render it non-original, I shift my focus from restoration to making it as good as I can as a guitar.

I love the California Grape. It reminds me of a mid-60's Schwinn Stingray!
A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Re: Mosrite VIII that Could Be
Hey All,
Man this why the Mosrite Forum is of such noteworthy credit to the Founder. How else would I have been able to benefit from such an outstanding range and depth of constructive perspective, experience, culture, and expertise. This is very cool.
Well I am going to preserve the original Calif Grape finish; I might go custom "mistake plate" for the tailpiece mis-drill holes, and just leave the couple of nasty little gouges that someone seems to have tried to (micro steel-wool?) or something (which only made it worse); but that's her story.
I knew when I bought this and the following hardware components that it would never be anything more than my own (very non-original) personal Mosrite re-creation that would only have any real value to me and maybe a few (Mosrite crazies) like many of our Forum members. Just a hopefully really good playing and distinctive musical conversation piece. (I have my other 3 all-original Mosrites to adore in that "all -original" way).
Finally, I believe it sort of important and of future (research) value to preserve as many of the relatively rare Calif Grape finish guitars as possible, just so they can be looked at for years to come.
Yes, the Mosrite VIII that WILL BE. The Forum is the Best.
Next stop the PROJECT category.
