Ventures Model Excellent Pickup Mounting Question

Postby david phantomatic » Tue Sep 21, 2010 3:13 pm

So I've begun to notice that when I'm playing relatively hard(which I tend to do at practice and in live situations) that the bridge pickup on my starts to pull up and will begin to mute the strings.
Today while trying to do a checkup on the guitar I decided to take that pickup off and see that the issue is.
As it turns out, the pickup isn't attached to anything, it's simply resting on the surround, is that how they're supposed to be or should it be attached to the brass plate underneath that's keeping the surround attached to the guitar?
And if it's supposed to be attached, how would I go about reattaching it, glue, solder?

Thanks.

Not familiar with how the Excellent pickup mounts, but I would take a look under the other pup and that should answer your question. Epoxy is always a safe bet. That's how the original Mosrites were made.

On the Excellent I had, there was a metal bar running underneath the pickup from one adjustment spring to the other. The pickup itself was attached to this bar by a piece of foam rubber glued to the pickup on either side of the bar in a sort of foam "hammock". Mine had a similar issue to yours since the foam had partially unglued on one side. A bit of glue and a c-clamp and it was good to go.

Yeah, I put a dab of glue on it and clamped it down for about a half hour and it seems like it's holding pretty well.
But while removing the pickup the magnets fell off, so I threw a line of glue on them and clamped them down also.
And now that it's all back together, I plugged it in and there's a HUGE loss in volume on that pickup now.
Is this going to be fixable or should I just start shopping for a new pickup?

Thanks again for the help guys.

My guess is you didn't put the magnets back in the right way. Have a look at the neck pickup to make sure you've got the magnet orientations correct.

They should be installed opposing each other if I recall correctly.

I put them in the same way they came out, but I guess I'll try moving them around.

If for some reason the pickup is actually kaput, I'd strongly recommend either Elliott or M3 handwound pickups. They'll really bring the guitar to life.
