A question about tuners

Postby GTSP » Fri Sep 04, 2009 6:06 am

Did Mosrite ever use anything other than Klusons?

I recently bought a Celebrity III. The tuners look new & they aren't Klusons. I assumed they are replacements, but then I saw a pic on Ebay w/ a Mosrite with the same kind of tuners. It plays real good, but I notice the difference. Should I get a set of Klusons & put them on?

Not a real big deal, but its a detail that I'd maybe like to correct if it is historically inaccurate.

I'm no expert on Mosrite history at all. However, my Celebrity III is a 1966 and it has Kluson. Personally, I like keeping my vintage stuff original if it's possible. Hopefully someone will come along that knows the history of tuner useage.

If the tuners look like this, they are original. Click on the photo to make it larger.

Here's one exlanation from http://www.mosriteforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1795&p=17415&hilit=japanese+tuners#p17415. I have two guitars with the diamond tuners, the late '60s Combo and the '71 Black Beauty.

They most often appear on Mosrite acoustics that were given away to churches for free and Mosrite electrics that were custom made for personal friends/acquaintances of Semie. Either way I guess he figured neither would complain if he skimped on the tuners.

Huh, interesting.

Ok, so should I keep these cheapo Japanese tuners on it since they are original, or should I replace them with some Klusons to make it look a little better?

I urge you to consider the words you just typed, and if the absurdity of that question does not reveal itself, go ahead and slap a Floyd Rose on there while you're at it.

If I might paraphrase dorkrock: Those diamond tuners are original and intended for each guitar they're found on.

Putting my own hat back on, one of the things that appeals to me about Mosrite guitars is their irrepressible personality.

I have never liked mosrite klusons. same reason I hate vintage fender tuners, the split shaft. I change all my mosrite tuners to grovers, just like johnnys. the only reason I wouldn't is if it was a collectors piece.
