Sounds like a good idea to me but I should be careful in choosing just the right speed and duration of rotation...we wouldn't want to make an overkill now, would we and last, but not least, getting yourself injured; electric drills can become dangerous :|
Be careful also not to damage the thread when clamping it in your drill-head.

Hope this helps…and please excuse my obvious lack of technical jargon.

Ha yeah, I promise to play safe.
My fingers have been mangled a few times, but I'm a lot more careful these days..

As for protecting the thread, I was thinking rubber tubing, my drill goes nice and slow.
Hopefully tomorrow will bring some clearer weather and I'll be able to tackle this one(my work area is outside).

Time for bed.

I've just rolled the bearings and screws in my fingers to see what they feel like.
Guess what?

Lots of friction!

I've been doing a little reading on bearings and have determined that my bearing is a "cage" type vs "full compliment".
Not sure what type would be smoother, but I suspect the latter.

Hmmm. If the bearings are that rough, I think replacement is the best option, unless you wanted to search around for nylon tubing that you could adapt to fit. I have done this with a Bigsby with very nice results...and 1/10th of the cost! Just make sure that the inner spindles have all those rough spots removed...100%. That's probably what gibbled these bearings!

SUCCESS!

That's right folks, I've got the problem licked.

I lightly sanded the barrel of the screw/pivot with 600 grit.
Popped on a set of strings and viola, the vibrato goes up and down freely!

It seems the gouges in the pivot were caused by them being slightly too large to fit in the bearing (the little rollers made the scratches).
I just sanded between my fingers until I no longer felt them scrape when I inserted and removed the pivot/screws.
The vibrato feels the way I expected it to when I got it.

Thanks for all of the help :)

Interesting to learn. That explains the apparent missing bearing pins in your rollers. Glad you got it solved :)

That's actually good, because the cage holds the rollers, or needles as some call them; the full complement type can easily lose a few on dis-assembly/cleaning, etc. Hope you can find replacements and while you're at it, go for the pins too!

The story of this repair will be up on my blog (see my sig for the link) on the 6th of March.
I'm so happy that I've got a a fully functional Mosrite(even of it isn't really a real one).

The story is up:
http://theawesomepowerofrockets.blogspot.com/2011/03/2011-repairs-mosrite-ventures.html

Any suggestion for what "heavy gauge only" means in terms of string gauge?
Can I get away with 11's on the stock spring or do I move up to the after market spring?

I'm still waiting for the 9's to break.
That solder trick really improves longevity.
